Van Conner , the Screaming Trees co-founding bassist who played on the rock band’s hits including “All I Know” and “Nearly Lost You,” died Tuesday of pneumonia. He was 55. His brother and bandmate, Gary Lee Conner, posted the news on social media. “He was one of the closest friends I ever had and I loved him immensely,” the guitarist wrote on Facebook . “I will miss him forever and ever and ever… .” Screaming Trees formed in Washington State in the mid-1980s and recorded a half-dozen indie albums before signing with Epic Records in 1990 as the grunge scene was coalescing around such groups as Mudhoney, the Melvins, Soundgarden and Nirvana. The band’s major-label debut disc failed to catch fire, but the follow-up — 1992’s Sweet Oblivion — was its breakthrough. The album featured “Nearly Lost You,” which became a Top 5 hit on U.S. Modern Rock radio and sent the disc into the Billboard 200 chart. From Perth to Hollywood: Why Cooper van Grootel is Australia’s hottest export
Between his impressive acting chops and boyish good looks, Cooper’s journey and charming persona has all the makings of a young Heath Ledger – a charming young talent from Perth who’s been thrust into the glare of the Hollywood limelight. “I really look up to Heath Ledger, I think he’s an amazing actor and I can draw some parallels between our trajectories. He started off in Perth and moved to Sydney and did a couple of projects there and then went to LA and set it off there,” he said of the late The Dark Knight star. “I think it’s really important to show those sorts of stories where people start off in a small town with not too much hope, and they take the big leap. I also love what Jacob Elordi is doing. I think his work in Euphoria is absolutely incredible,” Cooper added. Credit: Peter Hayes Like Heath, Cooper is incredibly passionate and determined when it comes to his craft, a path he chose to follow at age 11 following a life-long passion for movies – … [Read more...] about From Perth to Hollywood: Why Cooper van Grootel is Australia’s hottest export

More than 50 years have passed since Black Panthers Party co-founder Huey Newton entered an Oakland courtroom facing a murder charge, but his trial continues to influence the American legal system. The impact of the sensational case comes into focus in the short documentary American Justice on Trial : People v. Newton , directed by Andrew Abrahams and Herb Ferrette , and written by Lise Pearlman (based on her book The Sky’s the Limit ). It was produced by Abrahams and Pearlman. The film has earned a spot on the coveted Oscar shortlist despite lacking distribution. “When we think about great trials, we don’t think of this one,” Abrahams tells Deadline. “But when you start to look at it, it actually is.” The film dials back to 1967 when police in Oakland pulled over a van in which Newton was riding. ‘The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills’ Star Lisa Rinna Says She “Hated” Her Last Season On The Show
Lisa Rinna is owning it and talking about it after her departure from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills . The reality show star recently announced she would not be returning for Season 13 of the Bravo series after 8 seasons. Following her exit, Rinna is revealing what she didn’t like about her last season on the show and is not holding back. “I f***ing hated this year. For a lot of reasons,” she told Interview Magazine . “My mom died, we all know that. But that’s not the biggest reason. The story just didn’t get told as two-sidedly as I would’ve liked. How about that?” Rinna is referring to the moment the RHOBH cast took a trip to Aspen and Kathy Hilton allegedly had a meltdown and made some crazy claims. According to Rinna, the moment was intense and left her in complete shock. Unfortunately, cameras were down at the time and nothing was filmed and it became hearsay. “It was unfortunate that there weren’t cameras in Aspen. VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society
Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society ’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 VES Awards , which were announced today. Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010. The hardware will be doled out at the 21st annual VES Awards on Wednesday, February 15, at The Beverly Hilton. Avatar: The Way of Water will vie for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — the category that hews closest to the Visual Effects Oscar — against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick , the film right behind the Avatar sequel on the 2022 list of top … [Read more...] about VES Awards Nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Smashes Records With 14 Noms From Visual Effects Society

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons. The 3,500-member Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of IATSE’s 13 West Coast studio locals. The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. As reported here exclusively last week, more than 3,300 industry figures have signed another petition calling … [Read more...] about Thousands Sign Pay Equity Petition For Animation Industry’s Female-Dominated Color Stylist Craft
