At 15, Christina Ricci appeared in a PG-13 comedy called Now and Then , in which four middle-aged best friends meet up to reflect on their teenage selves. Nearly 30 years later, Showtime ’s Yellowjackets is that film’s hard-R evil twin, in which the fortysomething members of a New Jersey school’s female football team are haunted by memories of a traumatic plane crash that left them stranded when they were kids. It’s hard to pick a single performance from a terrific ensemble, but Ricci’s portrayal of the twisted Misty Quigley, played in flashback by Sammi Hanratty , is a standout in a series that shocks and surprises. DEADLINE: Why did you want to want to do Yellowjackets ? CHRISTINA RICCI : I loved the idea of it — the premise in general. But then I read the pilot script and the only scene I had in the whole episode was such an incredibly well written, succinct, informative, evocative scene. It was about a character type I’ve always been fascinated by — … [Read more...] about ‘Yellowjackets’ Christina Ricci On Why She Roots For The Underdog — Even If It Bites Her

Divino Niño Rebel Against the Church on Sparkling Reggaeton-Fused Track ‘XO’
The Chicago-based band Divino Niño filled their 2019 breakthrough album, Foam, with lush, anti-gravity dream pop, so light it seemed able to drift listeners into a blissful new dimension. But on their upcoming album, Last Spa on Eart h , the band is playing with bolder sounds — and their new single, “XO,” is just a hint of the surprises they’ve prepared. The track is one of Divino Niño’s most upbeat without abandoning their skill for lithe, breezy production. “Over that summer [when we made the album], we fell back in love with J Dilla ,” the band tells Rolling Stone. “We were also really into this reggaeton track by L-Gante [that] he did with Bizarrap . In both instances, we got really into the idea of creating a beat that had swing and felt a bit drunk, s o we definitely moved the drums samples a lot to create a less quantized vibe.” The song slides between English and Spanish, something that’s reflective of the writing on Last Spa on Earth. “Naturaleza,” the charming collaboration from Camilo and Nicki Nicole , is all about celebrating your own quirks and eccentricities — and the video accompanying the song with is as fun and idiosyncratic as the track’s message. The two artists play with whimsical visuals that riff on surrealism and pop art, all while encouraging listeners to be their authentic selves. The video, directed by Camilo’s wife Evaluna Montaner and filmed in Miami last May, matches unexpected scenes with the song’s mischievous production. “It fills me with enthusiasm to have worked together from the beginning to the end along with a video directed by my wife that we made as a family for this album,” Camilo said in a release. He also raved about teaming up with Nicki Nicole and talked about how well they worked together. “Nicki is a one-of-a-kind artist, the type that you only come across once. ‘Emily the Criminal’: Aubrey Plaza Wants to Stick It to the Man
Early in Emily the Criminal , Emily Benetto ( Aubrey Plaza , sporting a New Jersey-native accent) is asked about her permanent record in a job interview. It’s a trick question. Despite telling her otherwise, this prospective employer has already done a background check. They already know about the low points on her rap sheet. So they know, when she tries to explain herself, that she’s lying, or at least only telling half of the truth. It’s about “trust,” you understand. You can imagine why someone with a record who’s desperately in need of a job might fudge the details of their past, especially if they think they won’t get caught. Desperation does that. Getting a job might feel worth the risk. That’s the trap set for Emily more than once in this minor pressure cooker of a movie. Emily has essentially — professionally, anyway — been condemned. The rap sheet is only part of her problem. There’s the $70,000 in student debt that makes getting a job that much more urgent. … [Read more...] about ‘Emily the Criminal’: Aubrey Plaza Wants to Stick It to the Man
