Edward R. Pressman , the prolific Hollywood indie producer behind Wall Street, Badlands, American Psycho, Das Boot and The Crow, among dozens of others, died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 79. His death was confirmed to Deadline his company, Pressman Films. With dozens of acclaimed and impactful films and TV movies stretching back to the late 1960s and including now-classics like Conan the Barbarian, Talk Radio, Bad Lieutenant and Brian De Palma’s 1972 Sisters , Pressman was noted for discovering talented directors early in their careers. In addition to Sisters he produced De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise , and, with the acclaimed 1973 TV-movie Badlands , Terrence Malick. Jason Reitman made his directing debut in Pressman’s 2005 Aaron Eckhart starrer Thank You for Smoking . Peter Luo’s Stars Collective, Sundance Institute Partner On New Award To Fund Metaverse Projects; First Three Winners Announced
EXCLUSIVE : The Sundance Institute and Peter Luo ’s Stars Collective ( Crazy Rich Asians, Midway, Marshall, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark ) have partnered on the new Imagination Award that grants $25,000 each to three metaverse -based projects that show innovation “in a rapidly evolving mediascape.” Candidates were submitted to the Sundance Film Festival ’s New Frontier Program with winners were selected by fest programmers and reps of Stars Collective, a talent incubator. The award extends a Sundance-Stars Collective partnership from 2020 that launched the Granting Fund to support diverse filmmakers from historically marginalized communities. Questlove’s Sly Stone Documentary Lands At Onyx Collective Alongside Kris Bowers & Dahi’s ‘Anthem’
Onyx Collective has landed a pair of documentaries including Questlove ’s upcoming Sly Stone film. The brand, which airs on Hulu, will air both Questlove’s Untitled Sly Stone documentary and Anthem , which follows composer Kris Bowers and music producer Dahi as they take on a musical journey across the U.S. experimenting to reimagine the National Anthem. Separately, the brand has struck an overall deal with Joseph Patel, who produced Oscar-winning doc Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised alongside Questlove. Questlove will direct the Stone doc about Stone, otherwise known as Sylvester Stewart, who was frontman of Sly and the Family Stone and known for pioneering funk music.
