Golden Globes Virtual “Red Carpet” Shows Off Nominees’ Style – Photo Gallery

· February 28, 2021 ·

The Golden Globes could have been less glitz and glamour and more pajama party, given the stay-at-home Covid-19 factor this year. But in the spirit of keeping on, nominees leaned into the awards show spirit Sunday and dressed up for their video conference moments. Among the glammed-up stars are Angela Bassett in a deep purple Dolce & Gabbana gown; Josh O’Connor of The Crown in a look by LOEWE—a modern twist on a tux with a white silk scarf instead of a tie; and Sarah Hyland, wearing an off-shoulder Monique Lhuillier gown in scarlet, with Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Leslie Odom Jr . wears a Valentino tone-on-tone mauve suit with a bold green turtleneck layer, s tyled by Avo Yermagyan, while Jane Levy , Best Actress nominee for comedy series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, appeared on E!’s red carpet pre-show via video link from Vancouver, Canada, where she is shooting the show’s second season. She wears an Oscar De La Renta … [Read more...] about Golden Globes Virtual “Red Carpet” Shows Off Nominees’ Style – Photo Gallery

‘This Is a Play About Shades’: Jeremy O. Harris Revisits ‘Slave Play’ Script

· February 28, 2021 ·

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ( $39 rather than the average $124 ), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadwa y and live performances around the globe. With everything in disarray, it was unclear whether the theater awards would happen due to the protracted season. Related Stories What It Took to Orchestrate 'Bad Romance' for 'Moulin Rouge! Spider-Man: Far from Home Has Officially Joined the $1 Billion Club at the Box Office

· July 25, 2019 ·

Spider-Man: Far from Home has officially joined the box office $1 billion club. The final movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 3 is also the third movie from Marvel Studios to cross the $1 billion mark globally this year and the 41st movie to do so overall. In addition, even before hitting the box office achievement, Far From Home was already the most successful of any of the previous Spider-Man movies. If all of that wasn't enough, the sequel is now Sony's second highest grossing movie of all time, just behind Skyfall ($1.109 billion). Spider-Man: Far From Home was able to hit the box office milestone less than a month after hitting theaters and many predicted it would get up past $1 billion globally after it debuted. With that being said, the sequel should be able to beat Skyfall in the coming weeks to become Sony's highest grossing movie of all time. The close ties to Avengers: Endgame ended up helping out both movies in the end. Rolling Stone at 50: Shaping Contrasting Narratives of Woodstock, Altamont

· February 7, 2017 ·

The images couldn’t have been more different. The cover of the September 20th, 1969, issue of Rolling Stone showed a man and a child bathing in the nude in a lake, the essence of hippie gentility. A few months later, the photo on the cover of RS 50 [January 21st, 1970] was a grim antithesis: a huddled, anxious-looking crowd, shards of sunlight trying to poke through the mist. The cover line for the earlier issue – WOODSTOCK : 450,000 – was celebratory. For the latter, it was far more ominous: LET IT BLEED . By early 1969, multi-day festivals had become part of the rock & roll landscape. But as the magazine’s staff would learn, preconceptions about what a festival could be – or how wrong things could go – were about to go out the window. The publication’s coverage of Woodstock and Altamont tested the staff like never before – and proved definitively that Rolling Stone was a home for serious journalism, no matter the topic and no matter how close to home it hit. … [Read more...] about Rolling Stone at 50: Shaping Contrasting Narratives of Woodstock, Altamont

In the Aftermath of Altamont

· February 7, 1970 ·

I t was perhaps rock and roll’s all-time worst day, December 6th, a day when everything went perfectly wrong. Altamont remains Topic A among the musicians who were there. After all, it’s not every day that a rock and roll band’s performance, let alone the Rolling Stones ‘, is accompanied by a knifing, stomping murder within a scream of the stage. “The violence,” Keith Richards told the London Evening Standard , “just in front of the stage was incredible. Looking back I don’t think it was a good idea to have Hell’s Angels there. But we had them at the suggestion of the Grateful Dead . “The trouble is it’s a problem for us either way. If you don’t have them to work for you as stewards, they come anyway and cause trouble. “But to be fair, out of the whole 300 Angels working as stewards, the vast majority did what they were supposed to do, which was to regulate the crowds as much as possible without causing any trouble. But there were about 10 or 20 who were completely … [Read more...] about In the Aftermath of Altamont
