Brian Jones: Sympathy for the Devil
Brian Jones, rhythm guitarist with the Rolling Stones from their inception in 1962 until his departure early last month, is dead. He was 25. Jones died shortly after being pulled, unconscious, out of the floodlight swimming pool at his home in Hartfield. Circumstances surrounding the latenight tragedy remain vague, despite testimony by three friends who were near the scene, despite a coroner’s inquest, and despite blatantly sensational coverage by the London press. Jones and his girl friend, 21-year-old Anna Wohlin, were hosting Frank Thorogood, a builder who had been doing repairs on Jones’ country home, and another friend, Jenny Lawson, a 22-year-old nurse. Shortly after midnight that night (June 2nd) he was found at the bottom of the pool. Artificial respiration attempts, first by Miss Wohlin, who is also a nurse, and later by ambulance attendants, failed, and Brian Jones was dead by the time a doctor arrived. First reports on the drowning of the musician left the cause … [Read more...] about Brian Jones: Sympathy for the Devil
The Last Days of Buddy Holly
It would go down in history as rock & roll’s Tour From Hell: the Winter Dance Party of 1959 that took place exactly 50 winters ago in February. Among the riders were the 22-year-old Buddy Holly, one of the radiant lights of 1950s rock & roll, from Lubbock, Texas; the 17-year-old Ritchie Valens, a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, from California’s San Fernando Valley; the 19-year-old Dion DiMucci (better known as Dion) and the Belmonts — soon to rise to the top of the charts with “A Teenager in Love” — from the Bronx; and the 28-year-old group elder, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, a … [Read more...] about The Last Days of Buddy Holly
The Human Cost of Viral Food Crazes
World War III will not be fought by explosives, nor by ammunitions, nor by cyber attacks. Instead, the weapon that will chiefly be used in the upcoming class wars will be a Popeyes chicken sandwich. This is the implication of the latest fast-food craze news cycle, which has been dominated by news of the Popeyes chicken sandwich. Upon its release a few weeks ago, the Popeyes chicken sandwich dominated news headlines across the country, which quickly led to it selling out in all stores. (Full disclosure: the author has not, at this time, tasted the Popeyes chicken sandwich, though she has oft bragged to her friends of her ability to sniff out a franchise location from multiple blocks away.) The immense popularity of the sandwich spawned countless think-pieces attempting to put the fried chicken wars into context; in a similar vein, it has also spawned a number of viral news stories about the lengths people have gone to acquire such an item. A Tennessee man, for instance, filed suit … [Read more...] about The Human Cost of Viral Food Crazes
