Golden Globes Ratings Looking Like All-Time Low For NBC In Early Numbers

· March 1, 2021 ·

Winners notwithstanding, the obvious shortcomings of the 78th annual Golden Globes on-screen Sunday night were reflected in the ratings for the NBC -broadcast ceremony. Although the Comcast-owned network doesn’t plan to release final numbers from Nielsen until Tuesday, semi-adjusted fast nationals reveal that the bicoastal show hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took a hit from last year. And we don’t just mean the worthy whack the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been taking from some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters over the 87-member group’s lack of Black members. Coming in with a 1.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and about 5.4 million viewers, the 2021 Globes telecast fell about 60% in both categories from the partially adjusted fast national numbers snared last year by the Ricky Gervais-fronted awards show. Trevor Noah Rips “Oscars’ Weird Foreign Cousin” Golden Globes & HFPA, Digs Into Cuomo’s Allegations

· March 1, 2021 ·

The Daily Show ‘s Trevor Noah had more to say about the Golden Globes ’ lack of diversity than the HFPA did during his “Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That” segment on Monday night. On Monday he recapped the 78th annual Golden Globes ceremony, taking jabs at not only the technical glitches that left many confused, but also the controversy surrounding the industry awards show. Days leading up to the 2021 Golden Globes, or what Noah calls “the Oscars’ weird foreign cousin,” a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has zero Black journalists among its ranks. While Time’s Up and a number of notable Hollywood stars slammed the HFPA for its lack of representation, Noah had his own criticism. ‘Nomadland’s Golden Globe Win For Best Film Drama Solidifies Status As The Pic To Beat This Awards Season

· February 28, 2021 ·

UPDATED with video: In an awards season unlike any we’ve seen, the Golden Globes stuck to the script when it came to the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, with Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland taking home the top prize Sunday night. It was the film’s second win at the 78th Golden Globes after its director, Chloé Zhao, made history by becoming the first Asian woman and second woman to take home the helmer prize. In the marquee Best Motion Picture race, Nomadland beat out fellow nominees The Father, The Trial of The Chicago 7, Mank and Promising Young Woman. In a recurring theme throughout the night as the show was running long, the broadcast seemed to start to play Zhao off moments into her acceptance speech, only to stop and allow her to explain the film meant to hear. “Nomadland at its core, for me, is a pilgrimage through grief and healing,” Zhao said in accepting the top prize. “For everyone who has gone through this difficult and beautiful journey … [Read more...] about ‘Nomadland’s Golden Globe Win For Best Film Drama Solidifies Status As The Pic To Beat This Awards Season

Democrats Are Letting the Promise of a $15 Minimum Wage Slip Away

· March 1, 2021 ·

It doesn’t look like a $15 minimum wage is going to happen anytime soon. It sure seemed like it had a chance for a while there, though. Democrats wanted it in the coronavirus relief bill, which they’re gearing up to pass through reconciliation, a measure allowing the Senate to advance budget-related matters with a simple 50-vote majority rather than the 60 votes typically required to pass legislation without bringing the filibuster into play. But not just anything can be passed through reconciliation, and the it’s up to the Senate parliamentarian to decide what can stay and what has to go. She deemed last week that raising the minimum wage doesn’t qualify. There was still some hope for the the millions of Americans in 21 states still earning the federal minimum of $7.25. Sort of. Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) were considering a “plan B” late last week that would have bumped up wages by penalizing corporations that didn’t pay workers a living wage. But on … [Read more...] about Democrats Are Letting the Promise of a $15 Minimum Wage Slip Away
