Michael Wolf Snyder Dies: Sound Mixer For ‘Nomadland,’ ‘The Rider’ Was 35

· March 6, 2021 ·

Michael Wolf Snyder , the sound mixer for a number of film titles, including Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and The Rider , has died by suicide, according to a Facebook post from his aunt. He was 35. Snyder’s aunt, Cathy Snyder, shared a post from the sound mixer’s father, David Snyder, in which he details finding his son’s body in his Queens, N.Y. home. “Michael took his own life sometime in the last week, and it wasn’t discovered until I went to check on him Monday after he dropped out of contact for several days,” David Snyder originally wrote. “He has suffered from Major Depression for many years. For most people, this is an illness that waxes and wanes over the years. I’m sure it was difficult for Michael that he spent most of the last year alone in his small, Queens apartment, being responsible about dealing with the coronavirus.” Related Story 'Nomadland' Going Directly To Disney+ Star In UK Snyder, who detailed his son’s death in “The hope that it could … [Read more...] about Michael Wolf Snyder Dies: Sound Mixer For ‘Nomadland,’ ‘The Rider’ Was 35

‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned

· March 6, 2021 ·

Saturday AM Update: Updated with NYC B.O. data Even with three new wide releases at this weekend’s box office, and New York City finally reopening, numbers still aren’t at pre-pandemic levels, but there’s a lot of drama going on. Let’s start with Disney ’s theatrical day and date Disney+ release of animated pic Raya and the Last Dragon which looks to be leading the weekend with a studio-reported $2.5M Friday and an industry weekend estimate of $8.3M at 2,045 theaters. These numbers are slightly less than the $3M Friday and $9M-$10M we were hearing about, and they’re definitely less than the $14.1M that Warner Bros’ same day HBO Max release of Tom & Jerry posted last weekend. Raya ‘s opening weekend is also less than Croods: A New Age ‘s 3-day opening over its Thanksgiving stretch which posted $9.7M. And that’s definitely because Disney did not reach a deal with No. 3 chain Cinemark, as we first told you (thus, losing around 250 bookings), Harkins, and … [Read more...] about ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned

Oscars Flashback: ‘Grapes of Wrath’ and Its Depiction of Nomads Won in 1941

· June 3, 2021 ·

Decades before Chloé Zhao won the Golden Globe for directing 'Nomadland,' John Ford's adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel earned Academy Awards for best director and best supporting actress (Jane Darwell). If Chloé Zhao manages to nab this year's directing Oscar for Nomadland , she won't be the first to win for a drama about down-on-their-luck itinerant workers making their way across the American West. John Ford was awarded the statuette in 1941 for his adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel The Grapes of Wrath , which sees the Joad family abandon the Oklahoma farm they lost to the Great Depression and Dust Bowl and head to California — a fabled promised land — in a broken-down 1926 Hudson Super Six sedan. Along the way, they are beset by all sorts of tragedy: the grandparents die, various relatives abandon them, they are stranded at a destitute work camp, and son Tom (Henry Fonda), who only recently got out of prison, accidentally kills a security guard, sending the family … [Read more...] about Oscars Flashback: ‘Grapes of Wrath’ and Its Depiction of Nomads Won in 1941

Warner Bros International Enlists AI Specialist Cinelytic, Mostly For Distribution Data – CES

· January 8, 2020 ·

Warner Bros , which nearly 20 years ago released A.I. Artificial Intelligence , is bringing futuristic tech tools into its international operations, enlisting a customized AI platform recently introduced by L.A. tech firm Cinelytic . The companies announced an agreement Wednesday during CES in Las Vegas, where WarnerMedia has a significant presence this year. It is leveraging HBO’s Westworld to plant a flag at the tech confab. Two of its top executives spoke Tuesday about the May launch of streaming service HBO Max. The arrangement is a trial run and only involves the international side of the studio, with the domestic teams not yet connected to Cinelytic. While the official announcement said the system would be used “throughout the content value chain,” studio sources emphasized that distribution data is the focus, not giving studio brass some kind of robot development squad.
