‘The Paradigm Needs to Shift’: Why Pharrell Wants to Prep Marginalized Students for Tech Jobs
Like most weeks for Pharrell Williams , this one is packed. On Thursday, he and Neptunes co-producer Chad Hugo will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This weekend, he’ll host the latest edition of his Something in the Water Festival. And then there’s his most philanthropic latest venture, announced today: helping underprivileged kids avoid low-paying jobs. As Williams sees it, Something in the Water isn’t just another music festival. It’s definitely that, of course: The lineup for the three-day event this Friday through Sunday in Washington, D.C. includes SZA, Lil Baby, Dave Matthews, Lil Uzi Vert, Calvin Harris, Tierra Whack, Roddy Ricch, Omar Apollo, and Run the Jewels. “It’s all kinds of music,” Williams says. “It’s American music.” Reflecting Williams’ legacy, clout and posse, the festival will also present Justin Timberlake and the onstage reunion of his one-time collaborators Clipse (“We’re super-excited about that — it’s our family, man,” he … [Read more...] about ‘The Paradigm Needs to Shift’: Why Pharrell Wants to Prep Marginalized Students for Tech Jobs

When I imagine a stadium full of people coming together for a climate event centered on music, what I imagine is an enormous opportunity to feel a solidarity that has been so missing here. I truly hope … [Read more...] about The Flaming Lips, Sheryl Crow, the Roots Lead New Climate-Themed Festival This Fall
Mt. Joy’s Euphoric ‘Ruins’ Will Make You Want to Shroom in the Desert
After years of depressing news, political anxiety, and global burnout, Mt. Joy’s “Ruins” relays messages of hope and conveys a lesson for all to remember: “In love, we got to try.” “Ruins” is off the L.A.-based band’s new album Orange Blood , which they cut in the Southern California desert (shrooms may or may not have been consumed). The result is a psychedelic-folk record perfect for summer, and “Ruins” best represents its euphoric vibe. It’s stripped-down yet blissful, centered around lead vocalist Matt Quinn’s sparse, stunning falsetto. “Don’t cry, the river will be alright,” he sings. “We’ll just melt all the plastic to the sea/And maybe California is the only place.” “We put so much love into this album,” Quinn says. “My dream for this record is that it gives people a chance to be present and connect with something outside of the daily doom scroll.” “Ruins” does just that, urging us to step out of this collective feeling of stagnancy and find love in our togetherness. … [Read more...] about Mt. Rina Sawayama is taking a leap of faith — and it’s thanks to her mother that she’s certain she won’t be left free-falling off the edge of a cliff. On her latest single “Catch Me in the Air,” the singer delivers a maternal ode to the cyclical, codependent nature of growing up with one parent who’s figuring it out as they go, urging: “Mama, look at me now, I’m flying.” “I really wanted to write about this weird relationship with single parents,” Sawayama said in a statement. “You do catch each other in the air.” Speaking with Rolling Stone UK , the singer opened up about her relationship with her mother, sharing: “Everything that she had done in the first 28 to 29 years of my life had been for me. French Montana Ditches the Flashy Features and Sounds More Focused Than Ever on ‘Montega’
French Montana is one of rap’s great connectors. He’s known for crafting exuberant projects showcasing his irrepressible personality alongside a bunch of unlikely guest features. On his introductory 2007 mixtape, The French Revolution Vol. 1, he even has a song whose guest feature is credited to Martin Luther King, Jr. If he does nothing else, French Montana brings people together, even if that social butterfly aspect of his persona sometimes hampers the potency of his major-label releases. His 2013 debut Excuse My French felt fun and wavy in all the right ways. But it was also a bit generic: the singles could have been concocted in a boardroom where the main goal was to check off focus-group boxes just to conjure up a chart-topper. Its motley assembly of muscular club bangers and cameo-laden anthems lacked the grimy amiability so prevalent in the songs from his early mixtape run. And while his last album, They Got Amnesia , was a crowd-pleaser packed with … [Read more...] about French Montana Ditches the Flashy Features and Sounds More Focused Than Ever on ‘Montega’
