Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Although Red Hot Chili Peppers member Chad Smith and his doppelgänger Will Ferrell may have spent much of 2014 trying to prove how different they are from one another, with their hilarious competition on The Tonight Show , the drummer does have something in common with the actor: he’s very funny. As Rolling Stone read the drummer the questions fans sent in via Twitter, he cracked wise about everything from the Chili Peppers’ penchant for wearing socks on their private parts to how Ferrell “robbed” him of the Golden Cowbell during his drum-off with the actor this year. Over the past quarter century, Smith has played with the Chili Peppers, the supergroup Chickenfoot and various sessions with the likes of Kid Rock, the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash. And, with an eye toward helping other musicians, he has also spent time lobbying for music education in Washington, D.C. – including a recent trip to the White House – and building a drum community with his Chad Smith Drum … [Read more...] about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Machine Gun Kelly Gives a Bloody After Party Performance After Smashing a Glass Against His Own Face
Machine Gun Kelly marked his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden by marking up his face at the after party. The musician gleefully shared footage of the bloody incident on his Instagram Stories . In the first clip, he stood on a table in a restaurant and proclaimed to a gathered crowd, “Bro, I don’t give a shit—“ before smashing a champagne glass on his forehead (the clip was aptly captioned, “and this is when things turned…”). In the next video, MGK performed part of his Tickets to My Downfall song, “My Ex’s Best Friend” as blood poured down his face and he held a bloody rag in his hand. MGK, of course, is known for indulging in a little Jackass- ery himself, even making a cameo in the stunt-comedy troupe’s latest film Jackass Forever . That said, we hope his champagne smashing doesn’t leave a scar he feels obligated to cover up — we gather he doesn’t exactly like rock musicians who wear masks . Machine Gun Kelly’s summer tour will continue later this week, … [Read more...] about Machine Gun Kelly Gives a Bloody After Party Performance After Smashing a Glass Against His Own Face
Broken Bells’ James Mercer on Turning Dark Songs Into a Party Record
Last week, Danger Mouse told us that Broken Bells ’ new album After the Disco was “a pretty sad record.” The other half of the Bells’ equation, the Shins ’ James Mercer , says it’s not a total buzzkill. “There’s a lot of personal angst there,” Mercer says. “If you were to take the chords and play them on a piano they would sound pretty sad. But then you add the beat and the hooks and it becomes kind of a party record in a way.” Rolling Stone spoke to Mercer about what After the Disco means to him, how parenting influences his songwriting and what the new U2 album might sound like. See where Broken Bells’ ‘The Ghost Inside’ ranks on our 50 Best Songs of 2010 When the Shins were touring for Port of Morrow, w ere you already thinking of the new Broken Bells record? There’s not a lot of thinking that I need to do away from the studio on Broken Bells stuff. Brian [Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse] and I come up with most of it there, together, which is kind of cool … [Read more...] about Broken Bells’ James Mercer on Turning Dark Songs Into a Party Record
Broken Bells Return to Intergalactic Disco on ‘It’s That Talk Again’
Broken Bells have shared a surprise new song, “It’s That Talk Again,” ahead of the premiere of of their concert film, Live at the Orpheum , airing Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia . The previously unreleased “It’s That Talk Again” was recorded during the sessions for Broken Bells ’ 2014 LP, After the Disco , and finds frontman James Mercer and Danger Mouse further exploring that album’s intergalactic dance floor vibe. Mercer’s vocals are often airy and delicate, complementing the song’s lithe, wafting synths; but the Shins frontman pushes towards the peak of his upper register as Danger Mouse’s propulsive disco beat and bounding elastic bass intensify. After the Disco arrived four years after Broken Bells’ self-titled debut , which was followed by an EP, Meyrin Fields , in 2011. The group spent much of last year touring in support of After the Disco , including festival sets at Coachella, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. Their new concert film, Live … [Read more...] about Broken Bells Return to Intergalactic Disco on ‘It’s That Talk Again’
Meyrin Fields
James Mercer and Danger Mouse are first-class astral geeks. And on last year's Broken Bells , the Shins frontman and the hip-hop surrealist came up with melancholic psychedelic folk hop – somewhere between Pet Sounds and De La Soul Is Dead . This EP suggests their one-off is a full-on "project." Mercer rolls out bright, mussy melodies and turns up his guitar a little, and D.M. decks out his tunes with elegiac surf guitar, computer funk and clouds of candy noise — it's otherworldly but still heart-tugging. "The oddity is aching," Mercer sings; it could be a Bells-tour T-shirt slogan, though these guys seem happiest in their studio bunker. Listen to "Meyrin Fields": … [Read more...] about Meyrin Fields
Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
Danger Mouse has become one of rock’s biggest producers in the past five years, working with A-list bands like the Black Keys and U2 – but he admits his personal life hasn’t been quite as successful. “I don’t have a relationship, so I’m kind of all over the place,” says the 36-year-old, whose real name is Brian Burton. “When I meet younger people, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not so young anymore. Is this the way it’s supposed to be?'” See Where Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album Lands on the 100 Best Albums of the 2000s Burton’s angst helped inspire After the Disco (out January 14th) – the second LP by Broken Bells , his collaboration with James Mercer of Oregon indie kings the Shins , who are on break. “He can be pretty dark in his musings about life, being single, all that stuff,” says Mercer, who crashed at Burton’s place in Los Angeles while they were making the record, often staying up late to drink and talk. “Whereas I’ve left a lot of that behind. I’m kind of … [Read more...] about Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
