‘Better Call Saul’ Recap: Chicken a la Kingpin
A review of tonight’s Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I choose White Heat without interruption over Jaws 3-D with commercials… “And when is it over for you?” -Mr. Varga Late in this week’s episode (“Breathe”), Jimmy calls Mike to arrange some kind of caper involving the expensive Hummel figurines he saw in Mr. Neff’s office during his job interview. This is a callback both to his eldercare work in Season One’s “Alpine Shepherd Boy” and to the idea of Jimmy and Mike as occasional partners, before Better Call Saul had so clearly become two largely separate shows operating under the same title. As Mike gets deeper into the cartel world, while the writers do everything they can to slow-play our beloved Jimmy’s transformation into the utterly amoral Saul Goodman, the two halves feel further apart than ever. Some fans love both equally, some prefer one over the other (I lean towards the Jimmy show, which is more emotionally rich and less hemmed in by events … [Read more...] about ‘Better Call Saul’ Recap: Chicken a la Kingpin
Top 5 TV: ‘Big Bang’ Gets Sexy, Steve Harvey Screws Up
L ate last Saturday night, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey said their goodnights on SNL and threw it to Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, who belted out a rousing version of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.” Everyone on stage looked absolutely giddy, from Maya Rudolph dancing around in a fabulous cocktail dress to Kenan Thompson, singing the late Clarence Clemons’ old “better be good for goodness’ sake” part. By the time Little Steven Van Zandt waved surprise guest Paul McCartney over to his microphone, the whole performance started to feel like a benediction. It was like television itself was signing off for the year. This whole week was filled with shows switching out the lights and locking the doors: some just for the holidays, some for the season, and some for good. Many went out strong. Stodgy characters made big changes, and long-running series saw things happen that have never happened before. An atomic bomb went off, and a pop culture institution laughed its way into … [Read more...] about Top 5 TV: ‘Big Bang’ Gets Sexy, Steve Harvey Screws Up
‘Yellowjackets’ Christina Ricci On Why She Roots For The Underdog — Even If It Bites Her
At 15, Christina Ricci appeared in a PG-13 comedy called Now and Then , in which four middle-aged best friends meet up to reflect on their teenage selves. Nearly 30 years later, Showtime ’s Yellowjackets is that film’s hard-R evil twin, in which the fortysomething members of a New Jersey school’s female football team are haunted by memories of a traumatic plane crash that left them stranded when they were kids. It’s hard to pick a single performance from a terrific ensemble, but Ricci’s portrayal of the twisted Misty Quigley, played in flashback by Sammi Hanratty , is a standout in a series that shocks and surprises. DEADLINE: Why did you want to want to do Yellowjackets ? CHRISTINA RICCI : I loved the idea of it — the premise in general. But then I read the pilot script and the only scene I had in the whole episode was such an incredibly well written, succinct, informative, evocative scene. It was about a character type I’ve always been fascinated by — … [Read more...] about ‘Yellowjackets’ Christina Ricci On Why She Roots For The Underdog — Even If It Bites Her

Nexstar Says Average CW Viewer Is 58, And Internet Can’t Stop Laughing
During a call with analysts today , executives from Nexstar Media Group revealed how they hope to turn the CW into more of a cost-conscious broadcast network that appeals to a broader audience. Turns out the CW is a lot closer to that goal than anyone might have imagined. The reality, according to Nexstar President and COO Tom Carter, is that the average CW viewer is 58 years old — which he thinks is why the broadcast network is also the lowest-rated among all five. Since the CW is home to such teen faves as Riverdale, All American and The Flash , news of its 50-something appeal elicited more than a few laughs online. “I would have laughed if the average age was 40,” wrote Mike Royce , the former EP on One Day at a Time , on Twitter. “58 is true comic genius.” Royce went on to suggest that his old TNT comedy Men of a Certain Age serves as a lead-out to Riverdale. After Riverdale, stay tuned for an all new pic.twitter.com/EAPeceLF9S — Mike … [Read more...] about Nexstar Says Average CW Viewer Is 58, And Internet Can’t Stop Laughing
