Baz Luhrmann ’s box-office-topping new movie Elvis does manage to show the powerhouse singer Big Mama Thornton (played by Shonka Dukureh) performing “Hound Dog,” a song she recorded in 1952, four years before Elvis Presley . But it leaves out two very significant players: songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller , who wrote “Hound Dog” as teenagers for Thornton, and went on to write “Jailhouse Rock,” “You’re So Square (I Don’t Care),” “Trouble,” and other hits for Presley himself (as well as “Stand By Me” for Ben E. King and countless other classic songs). Leiber died in 2011, but Stoller is thriving at age 89 — and he tells our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast that after many decades behind the scenes, he didn’t mind the omission. “Well, I didn’t expect anything,” he says with a laugh, “so therefore, I was not disappointed in that regard.” ( T o hear the whole episode, listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or press play above.) To paraphrase the composer himself, Frank Zappa isn’t dead. He just smells funny to a lot of posthippie pundits who claim the master Mother made his point with Freak Out, Absolutely Free and We’re Only in It for the Money before descending into the depths of pornographic cheap shots and jazz-rock redundancy for most of his next twenty odd albums. As the first release on Zappa’s own label, the four-sided Sheik Yerbouti won’t change everybody’s mind, but it reaffirms (at least for the faithful) Zappa’s chops as a bandleader and rock & roll wit who doesn’t have to be socially relevant to get a laugh. The opening salvo, “I Have Been in You,” is a marvelously snide sendup of Peter Frampton’s wimpiest hour (“I’m in You”) that does for putzy love songs what “Dancin’ Fool” does later for uncoordinated nerds with fatal John Travolta complexes. Indulgent scatological exercises like “Broken Hearts Are for Assholes” and “Bobby Brown” (in which the artist unleashes a few zingers at … [Read more...] about Sheik Yerbouti

EXCLUSIVE : Andrew Troy ’s film I Am a Man – The True Story of Chief Standing Bear has been named as one of the first that will benefit from the Cherokee Nation Film Office ’s tax incentive program, in support of filmmakers seeking filming locations and crew in Oklahoma. The CNFO’s mission with its $1M incentive, announced earlier this year, is to entice more film and TV projects to shoot within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation—following a recent influx of projects like Killers of the Flower Moon and Reservation Dogs — while also supporting Native stories and increasing the presence of Native Americans in every level of the film and television industry. I Am a Man is billed as an epic historical drama about the landmark Trial of Standing Bear vs. the United States of America, which became a defining moment in U.S. history, as it helped to establish rights for all Native Americans. It was his first major public appearance since the sudden death in March of Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins .
