Though Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes speech has reignited calls for a Winfrey 2020 presidential bid, late-night host Stephen Colbert isn’t entirely convinced the entertainment mogul would make an adequate choice. “Do we really want to elect another billionaire TV star? Granted, this one is actually a billionaire, actually a TV star,” Colbert asked during his Late Show opening monologue Monday night. The host proceeded to explain that Winfrey — also an actress, author, entrepreneur, and humanitarian — inspires him, but in a different manner when compared with other candidates: “She’s reasonable enough to consider the possibility that maybe being a billionaire TV star doesn’t necessarily qualify you to have the launch codes.” After presenting his words of caution — while still acknowledging that he would love to hear that the State of the Union is (in Winfrey's emphatic tone) "Stroo-oong!" — … [Read more...] about President Oprah? The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is pulling out the big guns as it heads into sweeps. The CBS late-night program will welcome several Daily Show alums including Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Ed Helms and Rob Corddry on May 9, it was announced Wednesday. Host Stephen Colbert famously worked with the group during his time at The Daily Show before he went onto host his own Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report. (Stewart, who has appeared several times, also serves as an executive producer on The Late Show.) The pseudo-reunion comes as the race between Late Show and NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tightens. Late Show recently celebrated its 13th week of victory over Tonight in total viewers. Both shows are headed into sweeps, as well as the final weeks of the 2016-17 schedule. The announcement also comes days after Colbert elicited controversy for making what some deemed to be a homophobic joke about President Donald Trump and Russian leader … [Read more...] about ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ Sets ‘Daily Show’ Reunion
As the nation goes, so goes late-night. The broadcast ratings race is suddenly red-hot again as the primary trio of hosts take distinct approaches now that the 2016 presidential election is a fading memory. And, for Stephen Colbert, his continued lean into politics is paying dividends. If Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office are good for anyone, it’s the frequently wonkish CBS host. His Late Show, the most aggressive in its coverage of Trump, has narrowed the once-sizable viewership gap with perennial leader The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, prompting many to wonder how secure NBC’s No. 1 status will be during Trump’s presidency. Colbert virtually tied Fallon the week of the inauguration. And, in his first full week of original episodes covering the new administration, Colbert welcomed former Daily Show host Jon Stewart to take Trump to task for his “Muslim ban” and narrowly won the broadcast week, edging past Fallon with 2.77 million … [Read more...] about Can Colbert Trump Fallon in Late-Night Ratings Race?
Hillary Clinton is adding at least one late-night stop to her upcoming media tour. The former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate will appear on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Sept. 19, it was announced Thursday. This marks her first late-night visit since she was defeated by Donald Trump in the November 2016 presidential election and just her second appearance on Late Show since Colbert succeeded Letterman as host. She previously appeared in October 2015. Emma Stone is also set to appear that night, to promote her new movie Battle of the Sexes. The Late Show is one of several TV interviews Clinton is giving this month to promote her new memoir, What Happened, described as a look back at the 2016 election as well as a look at a current administration under Trump. Simon & Schuster, a division of CBS, is publishing the book, and Clinton is also set to appear on the network Sunday for her first major TV interview since the election, on CBS Sunday Morning … [Read more...] about Hillary Clinton Sets ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ Return
Stephen Colbert has some tough words for Omarosa Manigault after her first night in the Celebrity Big Brother house. In a clip that was released Thursday afternoon, Omarosa had a heart-to-heart with fellow roommate Ross Matthews about her tenure at the White House. She told Matthews that she was “haunted” by President Trump‘s tweets every single day.Well, Colbert didn’t have much pity for her.“Oh really?!?” Colbert exclaimed. “Oh really, YOU were haunted?!? Out here, it’s been The Trumpityville Horror! The Late Show host offered Omarosa a “pro-tip.”“When you’re on a reality show, whispering doesn’t really work,” Colbert whispered to the camera. “Trump can still hear you.”He then wasn’t too thrilled when Omarosa told Matthews that “it’s not going to be okay.”“Yeah… I believe you,” Colbert reacted. “I had an inkling things weren’t … [Read more...] about Stephen Colbert Mocks Omarosa’s Tearful Confession: ‘YOU Were Haunted’ By Trump’s Tweets?!?
