Heather Stewart, the long-time British Film Institute executive, will step down from her role as Creative Director at the organization in September 2021 and will take up a new position as BFI Director Emeritus. In her new advisory role, she will continue to be an ambassador for the BFI, which awards public money to support UK film across the gamut of production, distribution, and exhibition. Going forward, she will focus on strategic archive development, worldwide fundraising and philanthropic engagement, and will also continue to contribute to the BFI’s cultural program as a guest curator, speaker and writer. The org will be recruiting a replacement Creative Director in due course. Stewart graduated from NYU Film School and started out at the BFI by handling the org’s first ever home entertainment release, paving the way for the BFI’s own DVD label. Burna Boy released “Wonderful,” a bright new single that hints at reggaeton, on Thursday. It’s the Nigerian star’s first release since March’s “Odogwu.” The crisp beat underpinning “Wonderful” ensures that it’ll be at home on dance floors — once they re-open — around the Atlantic; it also seems ready made for radio mix-shows. While the drum programming is lean, the single gains a jolt from reverential harmonies made up of Burna Boy’s own multi-tracked voice, a cheerful, pinging riff that sounds like it was played on a xylophone, and a jaunty horn line. “Wonderful” precedes Twice as Tall , Burna Boy’s upcoming album, which is set for release later this summer. It follows last year’s African Giant , which has earned more than 162 million streams to date in the U.S., according to the analytics company Alpha Data. 2019 also saw Burna Boy contribute to Dave’s “Location” (Top 10 in the U.K.), Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift (which debuted at Number Two in the U.S.), and … [Read more...] about Burna Boy Previews ‘Twice as Tall’ Album With New Single ‘Wonderful’
“I feel like there are more reasons to be excited about improvised music today than at any time during my 41 years on the planet,” the jazz critic Nate Chinen tells Rolling Stone . He has a point, and you don’t need to be a diehard fan of the genre to appreciate it. Crossover stars such as Kamasi Washington and Esperanza Spalding are receiving generous mainstream attention, alongside innovators like pianist Vijay Iyer and guitarist Mary Halvorson. Meanwhile, Thundercat, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and others are seamlessly fusing hip-hop, R&B and electronica with their jazz mastery, introducing elements of a century-old art form to new audiences. And five nights a week on national television, Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste showcases his ebullient New Orleans spirit alongside Stephen Colbert. In short, the contemporary jazz scene is bursting with promise — but how did we get here? See Also Review: Kamasi Washington's New … [Read more...] about What’s Behind the New Jazz Resurgence?
SAG-AFTRA has launched a new digital platform that will allow members and third-party witnesses to report incidents of sexual harassment in the workplace, which will also allow the union to track repeat offenders. During a press conference today, the union also unveiled new standards for the training, registration and continuing education of intimacy coordinators who oversee sex scenes in films and TV shows. The union said that these two initiatives are the latest in its efforts to “change industry culture and eliminate harassment.” With the launch of SAG-AFTRA Safe Place, members and witnesses can file confidential reports of sexual harassment that will be handled by the union’s Equity & Inclusion team, who are trained in trauma awareness and will work with the user to determine the best course of action and provide additional resources. Those who file reports can do so anonymously if they prefer. The union said that many of those who took part in the testing of the platform … [Read more...] about SAG-AFTRA Launches Sexual Harassment Reporting Site & New Standards For Intimacy Coordinators
Like many anxiety-ridden Americans, the first thing I do in the morning is roll over and check my email. Today (April 30th), I spotted a message from Peloton announcing three new kinds of scenic rides — the result of a specific licensing deal with Warner Music Group to soundtrack cycling journeys through, say, the Italian Alps, to the tune of tracks like Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling.” Members can now choose their rides based on distance or length of time, and they can also take guided rides with instructors. Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I decided to hop on my Peloton and try all three, to see if this news was actually something to be excited about or just the usual PR hype.
