Kim Gordon Seethes Against a Looming Housing Crisis on New Song ‘Debt Collector’
Kim Gordon has linked up with Bikini Kill ’s Erica Dawn Lyle and musician/filmmaker Vice Cooler for a scathing rebuke of a growing crisis in land and real estate, “Debt Collector.” The track will appear on Lyle and Cooler’s upcoming album, Land Trust: Benefit for North East Farmers of Color , out June 3. “Debt Collector,” with its crashing drums and gnarled, industrial synths, packs a brutal instrumental punch that pairs perfectly with Gordon’s quintessential disaffected vocal delivery. “You’re not welcome/To the gated community,” Gordon says, “We bought the block/But you gotta have cash/If you want one/You gotta bring your soul/You gotta pay the down the money.” In a statement, Gordon explained that her lyrics were inspired by the “financialization” of housing , whereby large companies and investment firms scoop up massive shares of real estate to trade it as a speculative asset while ignoring the needs of tenants. “I’m a bit obsessed with what’s happening with these … [Read more...] about Kim Gordon Seethes Against a Looming Housing Crisis on New Song ‘Debt Collector’

On the other hand, N Chandra who helmed the original film, in a chat with the same daily a few days ago, had said that he believes the Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit film shouldn't be remade. He had said that such iconic films shouldn't be tampered by him or anybody else. It’s Not Just the Barfights. Two Musicians Also Say Ezra Miller ‘Stole’ Their Music
When Ezra Miller hit up music producer Oliver Ignatius to help him work on a new musical project in February, Ignatius wasn’t immediately enticed. After all, he had a bunch of sessions booked for the next few months at his Holy Fang Studios in New York. But he knew Miller since they were teens and decided to make an exception. He never imagined that Miller, according to him, would steal the music they worked on and post it to his social media without credit months later. Something was off from the beginning, Ignatius says. Ignatius noticed Miller going through a dark moment and agreed to join the project as a main producer, but also as a “musical and spiritual life raft” for a friend. “They seemed to be heading out into deep waters,” he tells Rolling Stone . “They were going through a scorched earth-type fallout with their Hollywood career. They were severing many of the relationships in their life and seemed to be on a very dangerous spiral.” With that in mind, Ignatius … [Read more...] about It’s Not Just the Barfights. ‘I Miss Him So Much’: Mavis Staples on Her Last Waltz With Levon Helm
When Mavis Staples thinks about her late friend Levon Helm , memories of her family flood into her mind. Decades ago, when Helm and Mavis’ sister Yvonne were regularly talking on the phone about a possible joint tour of Black colleges, Mavis would feel left out. “I’d butt in and say, ‘Give me that phone — I want to speak to him!’” the 82-year-old singer recalls. When Helm would see the Staple Singers on the road, he’d greet Mavis’ father Pops Staples with the familiarity of a childhood friend. “Levon is the only person that would ever call my father Pops by his real name. He’d always say, ‘Hey, Roebuck! Come show me this!’” says Staples, launching into a spot-on impersonation of Helm’s Arkansas drawl. “It sounded so good to hear him call my daddy’s name, and my father was so tickled.” But these days, Staples’ strongest memory of her dear friend Levon Helm is from the last time the two ever performed together. Back in June of 2011, Mavis Staples and her band arrived at … [Read more...] about ‘I Miss Him So Much’: Mavis Staples on Her Last Waltz With Levon Helm

Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. But Wilsey Was Never the Same After
As Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” recently demonstrated, sometimes it takes a while for a song to catch on and become a hit. Lizzo’s track exploded two years after release, and something similar happened over 30 years ago with Chris Isaak ’s “Wicked Game.” When Isaak’s Heart Shaped World was initially rolled out in 1989, it didn’t make much of an impact. Then, with an assist from director David Lynch, “Wicked Game” caught on and got released as a single in late 1990. Finally, in 1991, the song broke into the Top 10. That was all good news for Isaak, who finally became the star everyone had predicted years before. But it was a mixed blessing for Isaak’s lead guitarist, James Calvin Wilsey , who came up with the swoony guitar lick that ran throughout the Isaak-written song. After a tenure in the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, Wilsey and Isaak formed a rockabilly band, Silvertone, in 1980; by 1985 Isaak was the frontman and Silvertone became the name for his backup group, which … [Read more...] about Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. ‘Better Call Saul’ Recap: Kim Reverts to a Life of Crime
A review of this week’s Better Call Saul , “Axe and Grind,” just as soon as we sidebar in the law library… “Relax. You got away with it.” —Kim’s mom What happens to Kim? This is a question I asked regarding the last Saul episode to feature young Kim (still played by Katie Beth Hall, with her hair pulled partially back, but not yet in the full power- ponytail of adult Kim) and Kim’s mom (Beth Hoyt, who still looks and sounds uncannily like Rhea Seehorn). That episode, “Wexler V. Goodman,” opened with young Kim walking away from her drunken mother rather than getting into a car with her. It closed with Kim explaining in great detail why she had every good reason to break up with Jimmy, only for her to declare at the last moment that perhaps they should get married instead. It was Kim’s weakness for hustlers and damaged people winning out over her understanding of what is good, both for her and the world at large. “Axe and Grind” begins a bit differently, though it … [Read more...] about ‘Better Call Saul’ Recap: Kim Reverts to a Life of Crime
