Following criticism that every Star Wars director has been a white male, Lucasfilm has done a game changer, announcing Victoria Mahoney as the Second Unit Director for Star Wars 9. Mahoney will be the first African American and first female director to work as any kind of director on a Star Wars movie, so this is a historic move for Lucasfilm. The criticism of Lucasfilm and Star Wars first surfaced earlier this year when Variety reported a statistic that 96% of the writers and directors for Star Wars are white males. This immediately became a big issue for many people, especially considering the move for gender equality in the film industry that has become a hot topic in recent years. Considering that Star Wars is one of history's biggest franchises, fans were easily disappointed in its lack of diversity. Realizing the issue at hand, Victoria Mahoney was added on to the above-the-line crew of Star Wars: Episode IX, answering some fans pleas for diversity sooner than anyone expected. … [Read more...] about Star Wars 9 Gets First Black Female Director for Second Unit

The Last Jedi landed like a meteor this past December. And it went on to become the most profitable movie of 2017, earning $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. The Rian Johnson directed space opera offered staggering reveals that have divided an entire fanbase of devotees. Some absolutely love it. Even more seem to hate it. But a strange thing has happened for its home video debut. A new petition was launched. And suddenly some fans decided they needed to see General Leia's arc finished. Now, they are calling for Meryl Streep to come in and finish the role.If Carrie Fisher were to get recast, this seems like the pure fantasy choice. Meryl Streep is the greatest actress of the last forty years. She doesn't look anything like Carrie Fisher and is taller at 5'6". But think of the buzz her casting would generate. Streep has never done science fiction. Imagine if Lucasfilm offered her arguably the definitive female role in sci-fi. Streep could build on Leia and make her even more … [Read more...] about 5 More Actresses Who Could Replace Carrie Fisher as Leia in Star Wars 9
With his Last Jedi press obligations completely out of the way following the sequel's release on Blu-ray and DVD, Mark Hamill is letting the world know how he truly feels. The man we once knew as Luke Skywalker says that he "doesn't care anymore" about returning to the Star Wars universe after the death of Carrie Fisher. Hamill could very well end up returning for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars 9 after the death of his character in the previous movie, appearing as a Force Ghost. But it appears that the idea of returning has been "tarnished" for the actor since Fisher died in December of 2016. The Han Solo character is dead, Leia reportedly won't be in the next installment, and Mark Hamill is unsure about returning now that he's the last one who can. Mark Hamill probably gets asked multiple times a day about returning to the Star Wars universe, which is still possible. But will he? If this new interview is any indication, it might take some serious convincing to get him on board again. Hamill … [Read more...] about Mark Hamill on Returning in Star Wars 9: I Don’t Care Anymore
If you came of age during the original Star Wars trilogy, and someone handed you a bucket of Star Wars action figures that only including Luke Skywalker amongst all the new Force Awakens characters, wouldn't your instinct to be to reach for him first? Apparently that's what Colin Trevorrow did, if we're to believe the latest rumors about his firing, and he got his hand slammed away with an affirmative 'No, you may only play with Rey, Finn and Poe'. The so-called creative differences between him and Kathleen Kennedy's Lucasfilm came from the man wanting to keep Luke Skywalker alive long enough to use him in the third and final installment of this new trilogy. Colin Trevorrow was famously fired from Star Wars 9 after he'd been working on the script for quite some time, and his boot came after others were also ousted out of the series. 'Creative Differences' has been the tagline for these exits, and a lot of people immediately assumed that Trevorrow was being cut loose after everyone got … [Read more...] about Original Star Wars 9 Director Was Fired for Wanting Major Last Jedi Changes?
On any given day, there are no shortage of Star Wars rumors, and one of the most recent ones to surface was that Meryl Streep may be eyed to replace the late great Carrie Fisher in Star Wars 9. That has never been confirmed, but it hasn't stopped others from asking about it, and during a new interview to promote the home video release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill was asked about the possibility of re-casting another actress to step in and play Leia in Star Wars 9, and here's what he had to say in response. The Star Wars icon does bring up a good point, about how prominent Han Solo was in The Force Awakens and how prominent Luke Skywalker was in The Last Jedi, before both characters were ultimately killed off in those respective movies. There had been rumors after Carrie Fisher passed away in December 2016 at age 60, that there were still some big moments the actress had left to film, including a confrontation with her son, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but those rumors were never … [Read more...] about Mark Hamill on Recasting Carrie Fisher in Star Wars 9: She’s Irreplaceable
