Having started a bit later tonight on CBS than planned due to NFL overruns, Star Trek Discovery aims to boldly take CBS All Access on a new subscriber rich adventure. After all the behind-the-camera drama, delays, secrecy and hype for the Sonequa Martin-Green -led 15-episode first season, Discovery has finally taken off. It’s a launch Leslie Moonves hopes will result in a signup windfall for CBS’ nearly 3-year-old streaming service CBS All Access. After all, Discovery is the  first new small-screen installment of the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise since Enterprise premiered in 2001. And Moonves’ plan just might work. Colin Cantwell, the concept artist and designer credited with creating many of Star Wars ’ iconic spacecrafts — including the TIE fighter, X-wing and Death Star — has died at the age of 90. The Hollywood Reporter first reported Cantwell’s death Saturday at his Colorado home. While no cause of death was provided, his partner Sierra Dall said on his official Instagram page that he had been battling Alzheimer’s in recent years. An animator and architect who almost studied under Frank Lloyd Wright, Cantwell gained a space background while working on educational videos for Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA in the late-Sixties amid the space race, Cantwell’s bio states . Colin Cantwell , whose design work on the Star Wars spacecraft thrilled generations of moviegoers, died Saturday at his Colorado home. He was 90 and his death was confirmed by Sierra Dall, his long-time partner. Cantwell’s film credits include special photographic effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, technical dialogue for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and computer graphics design for WarGames . His Star Wars design and construction credis include the prototypes for the X-wing, TIE fighter, Star Destroyer, and the Death Star. Born in San Francisco, Cantwell graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in animation. He then was personally invited by Frank Lloyd Wright to attend his School of Architecture. Before he made his way to Hollywood, Cantwell already had an amazing career. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has been around Hollywood a long time. But she’s still learning. Speaking to Vanity Fair’s Anthony Breznican , she admitted that the 2018 Solo film, about the younger years of the swashbuckling space cowboy Han Solo, taught her a lesson: don’t recast a core role. Kennedy took over Lucasfilm in 2012 with a goal to inject new energy into the Star Wars franchise. Solo was one such attempt, with Alden Ehrenreich in the iconic Han Solo role pioneered by Harrison Ford. Award-winning Israeli director Tomer Heymann is touring the United States in support of his latest documentary, Jonathan Agassi Saved My Life , a film that has earned praise in newspapers as geographically disparate as The New York Times and Israel’s Haaretz . There was talk of Agassi, the subject of the film, joining Heymann for the U.S. theatrical opening. But work obligations have kept him for the time being in Tel Aviv, where he currently makes a living in a rather more mundane field than the gay porn that formerly brought him notoriety.
