Fight us.One of the reasons why Wrath of Khan ranks as the best Trek film ever, other than the artistic vision of writer-director Nicholas Meyer, is a tremendous turn by Shatner as a very human Kirk.Say what you will about his oft-referenced proclivities for scenery-chewing bombast. In Star Trek II, Shatner plays an aging version of his most famous character with complexity and even subtlety (that intergalactic primal scream aside) as he grapples with regret, loss, and his own mortality. Both Star Trek II and its leading man will take center stage for a screening of the film on Saturday, June 23, at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix followed by a Q&A with Shatner. According to the actor, it's the chance for Trekkers to ask him anything and everything about the film.Phoenix New Times got a chance to speak with Shatner via telephone recently about the screening, as well as his feelings about Star Trek II and a few other subjects. We even asked him about his feelings on the … [Read more...] about William Shatner on Star Trek II and How Anthony Bourdain Was A Kindred Spirit
Star trek captain
The trailer for William Shatner's Star Trek documentary has hit the web. Epix HD will premiere the Shatner-directed film The Captains on Wendesday, July 21, also notably the first day of this year's Comic-Con. Coincidence? I think not. Captains, featuring interviews with five former Trek captains Chris Pine, Kate Mulgrew, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks and Scott Bakula, will follow the original Captain Kirk as he goes through the Trek franchise. The fact that this hasn't been done before is quite a feat in itself. A highlight of the brief 33-second teaser includes Mulgrew admitting that she hadn't seen Shatner's Trek. (And when some Trek fans referred to Shatner as "Captain Spock.") Will you be watching? … [Read more...] about William Shatner’s ‘Star Trek’ Documentary Trailer Features Chris Pine, Patrick Stewart (Video)

More DetailsStar Trek in 2017 has the potential to be vital and important. Gene Roddenberry’s original vision of inclusion, hope, acceptance and prosperity is one that feels antiquated and tragically lost amidst today’s dour headlines, and a new take on the legendary sci-fi franchise seems deeply necessary. Is Star Trek: Discovery — provided on CBS All Access, the broadcast channel’s new, growing streaming service — the show that we need, though? The answer to that question is not quite – based on its pilot, at least – but it’s a refreshing, invigorating and ultimately promising new series which attempts to bridge the gap between … [Read more...] about Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 Review
Debating which is better, Star Wars or Star Trek, isn’t likely to be more productive than debating which is better, my religion or yours, because both sides have fans who are devoted to their favorite franchise and thus unable to see issues from the perspective of the other side. However, while Star Wars and Star Trek share a futuristic setting, there are differences between them that could be basis for objective assessment of their relative merits. It appears that the essential distinction between both franchises is their different perspectives of the possible social and political conditions of future societies. Star Trek adopts an idealistic and optimistic view that technological progress will be accompanied by moral and ethical advancement, and a drive towards social and political Utopian ideals. Star Wars suggests that technological progress will not by itself push social and political progress and that primitive conditions could co-exist with extreme levels of … [Read more...] about 20 Hilarious Memes That Prove Star Wars Is Better Than Star Trek
