France Télévisions boss Delphine Ernotte Cunci is looking to “debunk” and tackle major societal issues such as sexual violence via the public broadcaster’s shows. Addressing Series Mania , Ernotte Cunci said she wants to be “free of constraints” in order to make meaningful programing. She used sexual violence as an example, which she said France Télévisions will spotlight with dramas, documentaries and news. “I want to debunk [major societal issues] like sexual violence and keep tackling them,” she added, citing documentaries the network made about the #MeToo scandal several years ago. Ernotte Cunci, who is also chair of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), praised TV writers for having “a sixth sense” for these topics, which helps with France Télévisions’ dramatic content. “There’s Too Much Product”: Sky Studios Boss Cecile Frot-Coutaz On Need For “Simplification” – Series Mania
Sky Studios CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz has called the plethora of shows on the market “really confusing” for viewers. In a keynote interview at Series Mania today, Frot-Coutaz addressed said the biggest challenge for platforms such as Comcast-owned Sky as one of discoverability. “The challenges of the industry have always been partnering with the right creatives and executing things well,” she said. “What’s changed massively recently is there’s just too much product. For consumers it’s really confusing.” The challenge was ensuring programs could cut through and reach the right audiences. “There’s going to be a real demand for simplification,” she said. Opening the Lille Dialogues section on the final day of the France confab, von Kruedener raised the requirement to be flexible and seek financing from more than one local network for projects, given that budgets have increased so steeply. He explained that Scandinavian and Eastern European territories have been doing this for decades. “Even if you’re only producing locally, national funding is not enough,” he added. “In Germany and other nations you now have to combine two local partners. Gunter Nezhoda Dies: ‘Storage Wars’ Favorite Was 67
Gunter Nezhoda , a recurring and popular competitive bidder in A&E’s long-running show Storage Wars , died Tuesday in Utah six months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 67. His death was announced in an Instagram video posted by his son Rene Nezhoda. In the video, Rene Nezhoda says that his father was a smoker for 30 years and while the family remained hopeful throughout the last six months his condition had recently deteriorated to the point where doctors could do no more. He said his father passed away peaceful in his sleep, adding, “no more pain.” “He was one of the guys on Storage Wars that never really got any hate,” Rene Nezhoda said. “People just loved being around him.” Storage Wars chronicles professional buyers of abandoned storage units as they bid against one another on units sight-unseen (or mostly unseen). Amazon Prime Video is exploring more global franchise opportunities following the success of the Russo Brothers’ Citadel. James Farrell , the streamer’s VP, International, told a Series Mania audience that it is “highly likely” his non-U.S. team will seek more Citadel- like universes across both scripted and unscripted. A Tomb Raider movie and TV series penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge are already reported to be in the works. “It’s such a cool way to take [subscribers] on a journey and no one has really done it before,” said Farrell. From the Russo’s AGBO, Midnight Radio, Cattleya and Amazon Studios, the spy thriller is airing as three versions from the U.S., India and Italy, starring the likes of Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
