He’s Back! James Cameron To Godfather ‘Terminator’ With ‘Deadpool’ Helmer Tim Miller

January 20, 2017 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE : He’ll be back! James Cameron , who regains certain rights to his prized creation The Terminator in 2019, is godfathering a new iteration of the film that might finally get it right in drawing a close in the battle between humans and Skynet. Sources said that Cameron, whose copyright reversion happens 35 years after the release of the 1984 classic, is in early talks with Deadpool director and VFX wiz Tim Miller to direct a reboot and conclusion of one of cinema’s great science fiction tales. David Ellison , whose Skydance co-financed Terminator Genisys, is bankrolling an exploratory effort that includes engaging some top-flight science fiction authors to find the movie creatively. Ellison still holds many Terminator rights, after his 2013 acquisition from sister and Annapurna principal Megan Ellison. She bought them in 2011 at Cannes for $20 million. This is the latest development in an ongoing saga. Indeed, The Terminator might have endured … [Read more...] about He’s Back! Cannes Film Festival Has Had Its Musical Moments From The Stones To The Spice Girls

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

In 1971, the Cannes Film Festival opened with a screening of Gimme Shelter by Albert and David Maysles, an immersive, vérité depiction of two weeks in the touring life of the Rolling Stones . If that was all it did, it might have been forgotten by now. But by a terrible freak of chance, the filmmakers followed the band to the most notorious concert of their entire career — the Altamont Speedway Free Festival in Livermore, CA, where the Stones, along with Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, were set to perform a free concert for 300,000 people on Dec. 6, 1969. “We didn’t know what it was going to be,” Albert said later. “We just had a childish faith that having seen the Stones and getting along with them, there might be a feature film there.” At the apparent suggestion of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead (who were originally set to perform at the festival but ended up steering clear due to serious … [Read more...] about Cannes Film Festival Has Had Its Musical Moments From The Stones To The Spice Girls

What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

French Trailblazer Omar Sy On Making Waves, Cannes Movie ‘Father & Soldier’ & The Battle For Diversity — Deadline Disruptors

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE : “Things have changed a little bit,” Omar Sy admits about life after Lupin . He laughs. “My parents do know what I do now.” That’s how the actor and his family like it. Low key. The Frenchman’s move to LA a decade ago was in part driven by a desire for more anonymity. In his home country, Sy is a superstar. In America, picking his kids up from school didn’t need to be a drama. “It’s still different being in LA,” he says, despite his growing fame. “Even if things have changed a bit, there’s still less attention here than it might have been in France. The guy from Lupin is not a big deal in LA.” In truth, “the guy from Lupin ” is becoming a big deal all over the world. Sy was already an established comic in France when The Intouchables took the world by storm in 2011. The film made an astonishing $426 million at the global box office and is still the biggest French film of all time. Sy became the first Black man to win a César award and the … [Read more...] about French Trailblazer Omar Sy On Making Waves, Cannes Movie ‘Father & Soldier’ & The Battle For Diversity — Deadline Disruptors

Siddharth On Portrayal Of Non-Hindi Speaking Characters In Films: We Have A Habit Of Making Them A Caricature

May 17, 2022 by www.filmibeat.com

Be it interviews or social media, Siddharth doesn't believe in mincing his words. Amid the Hindi debate which recently sparked off again after Ajay Devgn-Kiccha Sudeep's infamous Twitter spat, the Rang De Basanti actor recently talked about the way non-Hindi speaking characters were normally shown as caricatures in Hindi cinema. The actor told Indian Express, "If a character is from a non-Hindi speaking belt, we have a habit of making them a caricature." Citing examples of actors like late Mehmood and Mithun Chakraborty who essayed the role of non-Hindi speaking characters in films, Siddharth said, "From the age of comedians, (we had) actors like Mehmood who made unrealistic and strange portrayals which were very popular at that time. But today, you feel odd watching them. There was Mithun Chakraborty playing some Krishnan Iyer and selling coconut water. In those days liberties were taken in the name of entertainment. All these are cliches. That's not how … [Read more...] about Siddharth On Portrayal Of Non-Hindi Speaking Characters In Films: We Have A Habit Of Making Them A Caricature

Nile Rodgers Enlists Pharrell, Keith Urban for Diverse FOLD Festival

August 6, 2015 by www.rollingstone.com

Of all the impassioned encomiums delivered to Nile Rodgers during Chic ‘s set at the bandleader’s inaugural FOLD Festival Tuesday night in Riverhead, NY, Pharrell Williams ‘ words were the most precise. “This man has been on fire since before I was born. The creativity burned that cancer out of his body,” Pharrell told the crowd, referring to Rodgers’ 2010 prostate cancer survival . “Thank you for your tremendous genius contribution that’s moved and rocked so many generations. Anything you ever need from me in the future, you don’t have to ask. You just have to tell me.” Williams, who first collaborated with Rodgers on Daft Punk’s 2013 mega-hit “Get Lucky,” appeared to perform a mini medley of “Blurred Lines,” “Get Lucky” and “Happy.” But his spoken words rang truer. Since his first hit — 1977’s “Dance, Dance, Dance” with Chic — Rodgers has personified funk and disco music, falling in and out of favor throughout the years alongside his genres. In the past few years, … [Read more...] about Nile Rodgers Enlists Pharrell, Keith Urban for Diverse FOLD Festival

‘Montana Story’ Is the Anti-‘Yellowstone.’ That’s a Good Thing

May 17, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Say “Montana” to anyone currently consuming a well-balanced media diet, and they’re likely to immediately think of Yellowstone, the unbelievably popular Dynasty -for-cowboys TV show that takes place in the “Treasure State.” Taylor Sheridan’s modern-day Western doesn’t have a lock on contemporary narratives in the region, to be sure, but it does cast a slightly odd shadow over the similarly looming landscapes of Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s Montana Story . They even have a handful of coincidentally similar aspects in common: Both have ill fathers at their centers, ones whose reputations for power-brokering and being right bastards precede them. Both feature dead mothers, long-suffering sons, city-living daughters reluctantly returning to the fold. The insular world of the state’s indigenous population pokes and prods on their respective peripheries. And while the latter’s Thorne ranch (as symbolic a name as you can imagine) is far too modest to hold a candle to the lavish, … [Read more...] about ‘Montana Story’ Is the Anti-‘Yellowstone.’ That’s a Good Thing
