Former Sex Pistol Sid Vicious was arrested on October 12th at the Chelsea Hotel and charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend of almost two years, Nancy Spungen. Spungen, like Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie) a heroin addict, is thought to have died between the hours of five and nine on the morning Sid was arrested. Her body was found in the bathroom of the couple’s first-floor hotel room in a pool of blood. Dr. Geetha Natarajan, associate medical examiner for Manhattan, said the cause of death was internal hemorrhaging due to a single knife wound to the lower abdomen. Vicious’ personal friends in the punk community immediately suspected that Spungen’s death was part of a botched double suicide. “They were both really depressed and talked about dying the last few weeks,” said a woman who had become friendly with them at the Chelsea. Another friend said the couple had a long-standing agreement that if one died, the other would follow. Then, a week after his release … [Read more...] about Sid Vicious Accused of Murder

Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. The climate crisis is real. The statistics are grim. The hurdles are high. But if we learned anything from the recent vaccine development it should be that big things can happen when we all put our heads together, attack a common problem, and commit to making meaningful change. One easy change you can pledge to make is to walk the sustainable walk when shopping for shoes . Many titans of the footwear industry have probably earned a long walk of shame as shoe production accounts for a fifth of the fashion industry’s environmental impact and generates 1.4 percent of global carbon emissions annually. But nowadays, there are players like Allbirds and Rothy’s, as well as established giants like Adidas and Converse , who are thinking outside of the shoebox and making it easy to be green. A whole new world of vegan leather, bamboo … [Read more...] about Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability
Ukraine’s Jewish Community Fights Back Against Russia’s Invasion — and Against Putin’s Lies
DNIPRO, Ukraine — Before the war, Rabbi Meyr Stambler never broke Shabbat and never lied to his wife, with whom he had lived for 28 years. Now he has done both. If there is an emergency, like evacuations, he will answer his phone on Saturdays. In the early days of the Russian invasion, he sent his wife Sarah, his ten children, and his three grandkids to Israel, promising he would join them in a few days. But he lied. He never meant to leave Ukraine. Rabbi Stambler, the Chairman of the Chabad-affiliated Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, came to Dnipro from New York in 1991. He was nineteen years old. He has lived here ever since. He considers himself Ukrainian. “On average I sleep three hours per day,” he says. “Now I can devote all my time to helping my community without being worried for my family. I decided it was time for them to flee after the nuclear power plant in Zaporizzhya region — 130 miles away — was overtaken by Russians troops in the early … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Jewish Community Fights Back Against Russia’s Invasion — and Against Putin’s Lies
Gunman Kills 10 in Buffalo Supermarket: ‘Straight Up Racially Motivated Hate Crime’
At least 10 people were killed and three more injured Saturday during a mass shooting at a Buffalo , New York supermarket that the FBI later called a “case of racially motivated violent extremism.” The gunman — identified by the Associated Press as 18-year-old Payton Gendron from Conklin, NY — was taken into custody by police after the shooting rampage at the Tops Friendly Market, where Gendron fired approximately 60 shots from a military-grade weapon. Gendron was wearing military-style clothing, body armor and a helmet and was armed with a high-powered rifle. He had apparently traveled more than 200 miles to attack the supermarket. “The shooter was not from this community,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Saturday. “In fact, the shooter traveled hours from outside this community to perpetrate this crime on the people of Buffalo.” BREAKING: BPD on scene of a mass shooting at the Tops in the 1200 block of Jefferson Avenue. Police say multiple people have been struck by … [Read more...] about Gunman Kills 10 in Buffalo Supermarket: ‘Straight Up Racially Motivated Hate Crime’
Steve Martin Crashes ‘Only Murders’ Co-Star Selena Gomez’s ‘SNL’ Debut For Sketch On Whoopie Cushion Inventor
Steve Martin crashed his Only Murders co-star Selena Gomez’s first episode as host of SNL , for a pre-taped sketch on whoopie cushion inventor, Archie Gizmo. The segment on Martin’s fictional inventor came as part of the show American Inventors , hosted by Taylor Gosh (Gomez). “The automobile, paper cup, dancing, computer. These were all invented. But who did that, and what is their story?” Gosh wonders up top. “We begin with Archie Gizmo, the brilliant inventor of the whoopie cushion.” We then cut to Gizmo himself, who explains that back in the early ’60s, he was just a “struggling gag inventor,” who had thus far created only an early prototype of the whoopie cushion. “I knew it would be funny to have your boss sit down and [have] a noise come from his butt,” said Gizmo, “but I just couldn’t figure out what noise.” Helping the inventor to crack the case is Ms. Dina Beans (Aidy Bryant), a woman he sees from afar at a party. “Her energy was magnetic; her eyes … [Read more...] about Steve Martin Crashes ‘Only Murders’ Co-Star Selena Gomez’s ‘SNL’ Debut For Sketch On Whoopie Cushion Inventor
Pete Townshend on Mick Jagger and the Nature of Aging in Rock & Roll
M ick Jagger , Singer of the Rolling Stones , turned forty years old on July 26th. Apart from the fact that forty is a nice, round number, it also signifies the twentieth year of the Stones’ career. Looking for a maxim suitable to open an article in which I would try hard to find some reason why these events should be of interest, I came across a Proverb (22:6) in the May issue of Awake: “Train a boy according to the way for him; even when he grows old he will not turn aside from it.” The Times is an appropriate place for me to be airing my thoughts on this moment in rock history. On June 30th, 1967, my group, the Who , took an advertisement in the Evening Standard to protest against the savage sentences meted out to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for possession of drugs. We really thought we were going out on a limb, attracting the attention of the police and the press and probably opening ourselves up for similar busts. On the following day, however, the Times … [Read more...] about Pete Townshend on Mick Jagger and the Nature of Aging in Rock & Roll
The Buffalo Shooter Isn’t a ‘Lone Wolf.’ He’s a Mainstream Republican
There’s no such thing as a lone wolf — an appellation often given, in error, to terrorists who act alone, particularly those of the white supremacist variety. There are only those people who, fed a steady diet of violent propaganda and stochastic terror, take annihilatory rhetoric to its logical conclusion. Such was the case on Saturday, when a teenaged white supremacist named Payton Gendron opened fire in a supermarket in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo , New York, killing 10 people, while livestreaming the carnage on the live-video site Twitch. Prior to the shooting, he had posted a 180-page manifesto in which he laid out his rationale clearly: He was an adherent of what is called Great Replacement Theory, the idea that white people, in the United States and white-majority countries around the world, are being systematically, deliberately outbred and “replaced” by immigrants and ethnic minorities, in a deliberate attempt to rid the world of whiteness. It’s a conspiracy theory … [Read more...] about The Buffalo Shooter Isn’t a ‘Lone Wolf.’ He’s a Mainstream Republican
