‘This Is a Play About Shades’: Jeremy O. Harris Revisits ‘Slave Play’ Script

· February 28, 2021 ·

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ( $39 rather than the average $124 ), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadwa y and live performances around the globe. With everything in disarray, it was unclear whether the theater awards would happen due to the protracted season. Related Stories What It Took to Orchestrate 'Bad Romance' for 'Moulin Rouge! Rolling Stone at 50: Shaping Contrasting Narratives of Woodstock, Altamont

· February 7, 2017 ·

The images couldn’t have been more different. The cover of the September 20th, 1969, issue of Rolling Stone showed a man and a child bathing in the nude in a lake, the essence of hippie gentility. A few months later, the photo on the cover of RS 50 [January 21st, 1970] was a grim antithesis: a huddled, anxious-looking crowd, shards of sunlight trying to poke through the mist. The cover line for the earlier issue – WOODSTOCK : 450,000 – was celebratory. For the latter, it was far more ominous: LET IT BLEED . By early 1969, multi-day festivals had become part of the rock & roll landscape. But as the magazine’s staff would learn, preconceptions about what a festival could be – or how wrong things could go – were about to go out the window. The publication’s coverage of Woodstock and Altamont tested the staff like never before – and proved definitively that Rolling Stone was a home for serious journalism, no matter the topic and no matter how close to home it hit. … [Read more...] about Rolling Stone at 50: Shaping Contrasting Narratives of Woodstock, Altamont

Only 17% of Rogue One Dialogue Is Spoken by a Female Character

· January 20, 2017 ·

A lot has been made bout the fact that both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One have female lead characters, but a new study shows that might not be all it's cracked up to be. While both of these latest entries in the Star Wars franchise do have strong women as protagonist, both movies are still quite male heavy. Even lopsided. A new study shows that only 17% of the dialogue in Rogue One is spoken by one of the movies few female characters. Jyn Erso led Rogue One to becoming the highest grossing movie in the U.S., no small feat that Felicity Jones helped push the movie to the top the box office as the face of this first Star Wars anthology movie . The prequel was also praised for its diverse cast. But diving deeper into the story elements, and what actually happens on screen shows that not only the film's dialogue, but also the male-to-female character ratio is way off course. Christopher Nolan’s WWII Epic Dunkirk Gets Rated PG-13

· March 15, 2017 ·

There are only a handful of directors out there whose name on a movie is more meaningful than the stars attached, and Christopher Nolan is certainly one of those filmmakers. After succeeding on the indie level with Memento and reinventing the superhero genre with his Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan 's films have become highly-anticipated events, and his latest, the WWII-era thriller Dunkirk is no exception. Earlier today, the MPAA issued a PG-13 rating for Dunkirk , which has taken some fans by surprise. ERC Box Office reports that the MPAA handed down the rating today for, "intense war experience and some language." The site even joked that, if the age-old axiom "War is hell" is true, than Christopher Nolan 's Dunkirk may only be, "mildly hellish." Then again, there has never been any indication that Christopher Nolan was shooting for an R-rating while production was under way last year, and the first Dunkirk trailer didn't show any actual violence, … [Read more...] about Christopher Nolan’s WWII Epic Dunkirk Gets Rated PG-13
