Opinion Jordan Rhodes went close with a first half header Picture Paul Chesterton/Focus Images Ltd Paul Chesterton These are strange times for Norwich City as they look for the right formula for the real battles ahead. Put that rather painful Championship hammering at Sheffield Wednesday back on the final day of last season to one side and after those difficult early weeks of Daniel Farke’s debut tour, City by and large looked defensively solid. The residual problem was at the opposite end of the pitch. Take James Maddison out of the equation, and that goals against column would have taken on a even more alarming complexion. Maddison departed for good earlier this summer, which only heightened the need to find goals and a cutting edge where there had largely been none for too many months of a season which had periods of promise but rather tailed off. Rhodes opened his goal account in Tuesday’s 2-1 friendly defeat to FC Union Berlin in Delbruck, following his season long loan move from Sheffield Wednesday. The prolific striker’s former past as an Ipswich Town trainee was always likely to be highlighted but Rhodes insisted he has felt nothing but warmth from fans and new team mates. Social media clips earlier this week showed the Scotland international performing a Bon Jovi track as part of his initiation song and the forward admits he has already encountered a special vibe in Daniel Farke’s squad. “Did the song get out? Not me finest minute,” he said. “Whether it is something like that, or a bit of fun, it all helps. Ivo Pinto's future at City has been a hot topic during recent days Picture: Paul Chesterton/Focus Images ©Focus Images Limited www.focus-images.co.uk +447814 482222 With the arrival of a new right-back it was inevitable that questions about Ivo Pinto’s future would follow. David Freezer assesses the City captain’s options. Amid the excitement about Felix Passlack’s loan arrival from Borussia Dortmund, speculation about Ivo Pinto’s future with City has increased rapidly. Perhaps the writing has been on the wall for a while for the 28-year-old though? The Portuguese right-back took over as Canaries captain as Russell Martin fell away from first-team contention last season. As one of the most likeable players in the squad, Pinto was an easy choice for Daniel Farke. However, for a fair chunk of the second half of last season the former Dinamo Zagreb full-back found himself playing second fiddle to Southampton loanee Harrison Reed, who was primarily a … [Read more...] about Pinto facing battle for his Canaries future after loan signing

Ryan Kent is likely to be loaned out by Liverpool again this summer. Picture: PA PREMIER LEAGUE LOANS Ryan Kent (Liverpool) Kent’s stock has fallen somewhat in recent times but the talent is known to be there, with Jurgen Klopp a big admirer. He started last season in the Bundesliga with Freiberg and ended it at Bristol City, with the Robins said to have been fined ‘£300,000’ for not including him in squads the agreed amount of times. The 21-year-old is likely to be given the chance to impress Klopp during pre-season but another, hopefully more profitable, loan away is thought to be on the cards. It was a blast - We can come on to the carnage shortly. But if this proves to be James Maddison’s swansong ahead of a Premier League bid too sweet to turn down this summer then it was a sad exit. Hobbling to the touchline and straight down the tunnel nine minutes into this rout. Before re-emerging at the end on crutches with his left knee in a protective brace. Contrast that with the fanfare that accompanied Wes Hoolahan out of the football club last weekend or even the stage-managed exit of Owls’ stalwart Glenn Loovens two minutes from the interval at Hillsborough. Maddison has been the one shining light in season which ended on a … [Read more...] about Paddy’s Pointers: Five observations from Norwich City’s 5-1 Championship hammering at Sheffield Wednesday
