May 16, 2022 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE: IFC Films and AMC + have snapped up the U.S rights to Freegard from directors Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn. The pic will see a theatrical release, PVOD and streaming debut on AMC+ later this summer. The project is inspired by the chilling true story of conman Robert Freegard ( James Norton ) and Alice Archer ( Gemma Arterton ), the woman who brought him down. A master manipulator, Freegard kidnapped countless victims, convincing them he was undercover MI5. A tale of lies, loyalty, gaslighting, fear, hope, and the investigation and high-stakes manhunt, which saved the life of Freegard’s final victim. Patterson and Lawn co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bronner ( The Mauritanian ) based on the article Chasing Agent Freegard by Bronner. The pic also stars Shazad Latif ( Star Trek Discovery ), Marisa Abela ( Industry ), Edwina Findley ( The Wire ), Sarah Goldberg ( The Dark Knight Rises ), Jimmy Akingbola ( Ted Lasso ), and Julian … [Read more...] about IFC Films & AMC+ Pick Up James Norton & Gemma Arterton Espionage Thriller ‘Freegard’

CNN Films, HBO Max Commission Little Richard Doc ‘I Am Everything’ From ‘All In’ Filmmaker Lisa Cortés

May 13, 2022 by deadline.com

CNN Films and HBO Max have commissioned a new documentary about Little Richard , from Emmy-winning director Lisa Cortés ( All In: The Fight for Democracy ) of Cortés Filmworks. The film, Little Richard: I Am Everything (w/t), will take a deep dive into the life and career of the iconic musician, who did what he felt, and felt what he did—”at all costs”—presenting never-seen-before archival footage, as well as interviews with loved ones, colleagues, contemporary musicians and historians. Richard Penniman, also known as Little Richard, lived a life as large as his dreams, breaking barriers and becoming a global music superstar. He was a key architect of rock and roll, with his unique sound, performance and bravado launching the fresh and exciting new genre. The creative genius behind tunes ranging from “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally” to “The Magic School Bus Theme” also personified the fearless independence that rock inspired, despite the new music’s ascendance during … [Read more...] about CNN Films, HBO Max Commission Little Richard Doc ‘I Am Everything’ From ‘All In’ Filmmaker Lisa Cortés

‘Final Cut’ Cannes Opening-Night Film Review: Michel Hazanavicius’ Very Good Comedy About Making A Very Bad Zombie Flick

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

Originally planned to open the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year before the worsening Covid situation forced the festival to again go virtual, Oscar-winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius made the right decision in insisting his comedy Final Cut (Coupez!), about the making of a low-budget bad zombie movie, should be presented with a full house in a theatre, thankfully not to be watched on your computer at a prestigious film festival. In holding out for the real thing he scored big as it was chosen as the opening-night out-of-competition film of the 75th Cannes Film Festival. It seems entirely appropriate that a movie all about the love of making movies should signal the full return of a fest devoted to all things cinema over the course of its 75 years. And for this director, whose 2011 black-and-white silent film The Artist was also a love letter to movies, and also premiered here on its way to Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, this seems fated to be. … [Read more...] about ‘Final Cut’ Cannes Opening-Night Film Review: Michel Hazanavicius’ Very Good Comedy About Making A Very Bad Zombie Flick

Cannes Opening-Night Film Is A Family Affair For Bérénice Bejo And Michel Hazanavicius

May 18, 2022 by deadline.com

EXCLUSIVE: Bérénice Bejo ( The Artist) agreed that making Cannes opening-night film Final Cut (Coupez!) with filmmaker husband Michel Hazanavicius ( The Players) had been a family affair. Pausing for a split second to make a mental calculation, she began, “Our daughter, his daughter, a niece who was the camera woman in the film, and our son who you barely saw — yes, it was a family affair.” To explain, she’s referring to the couple’s daughter Gloria, Hazanavicius’ daughter Simone from a previous relationship, his brother’s daughter and niece Raika and the couple’s teenage son Lucien. ”That’s right,” Bejo told Deadline at the opening-night dinner for Final Cut at the Hotel Martinez . “We wanted the family close. The pandemic was going on and it gave us peace of mind to all be together.” It was well after midnight, probably closer to 1am, and following each conversation with a mixture of guests, Bejo inched further towards the exit where very nice … [Read more...] about Cannes Opening-Night Film Is A Family Affair For Bérénice Bejo And Michel Hazanavicius

It was a truly glamorous moment “We play buskers,” Barlow joked. Owen explained that the trio are seen busking at a train station in Athens. They perform the number “Shine”, a song from their 2006 comeback album Beautiful World. ”Yeah, we did the scene once Coky negotiated our ten-minute cameo down to about three seconds,” commented Barlow, to much hilarity from his bandmates who’d gathered in a suite at the Majestic Hotel in Cannes . Cannes Review: Léa Mysius’ Directors’ Fortnight Film ‘The Five Devils’

May 23, 2022 by deadline.com

Director Léa Mysius expertly crafts a queer, witchy movie in her Directors’ Fortnight debut film The Five Devils (Les Cinq Diables), which received a five-minute standing ovation at the screening I attended. Mysius takes concepts like identity, sexuality and mysticism and creates an intricate genre film that’s part time travel, part drama, and all heart. Vickey (Sally Dramé) is a mixed-race child growing up in a small town in France, and she has a special gift: she can reproduce any scent from anything and anyone anywhere. She keeps the scents bottled for reference. Her sense of smell is so sharp she can tell which animal licked a pine cone and could find her mother Joanne (Adèle Exarchopoulos) by smell even when she’s 20 feet away from her and covered in pine. Joanne is a swim instructor and lifeguard who is in a loveless marriage with Jimmy (Moustapha Mbengue). When his sister Julia (Swala Emati) shows up for a visit, the environment in the house becomes … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Léa Mysius’ Directors’ Fortnight Film ‘The Five Devils’
