A Chinese court has rejected an appeal by a young woman who alleged sexual harassment against a popular male TV host in what has been referred to as a landmark case. Foreign media outfits reporting locally have called the decision a blow to China’s #MeToo movement. In 2018, Zhou Xiaoxuan accused CCTV host Zhu Jun of making unwanted advances, including kissing and groping her, while she was an intern at the broadcaster in 2014. Last September, a Beijing court dismissed Zhou’s claims saying the now-29-year-old had not presented sufficient evidence. The appeal was rejected yesterday on similar grounds. Zhou previously said the judge in the case had refused her requests to retrieve evidence, including security camera footage from outside the dressing room where the incident allegedly took place. Speaking to supporters after the verdict, Zhou said, “Four years have passed, and the most important thing is that we have raised this question: when a woman encounters … [Read more...] about Chinese Court Rejects Plaintiff’s Appeal In Landmark Sexual Harassment Case Against TV Host
Kevin Spacey lost his attempt to overturn the $31 million arbitration award he was ordered to pay for breaching his House of Cards contract with the harassment of young crew members. At a hearing in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, a judge listened to arguments from Spacey’s lawyer and then ruled that the embattled actor failed to show that the award was too “utterly irrational” to stand. Without meeting that bar, the judge said he wouldn’t step in to review and possibly reverse the independent arbitrator’s findings of fact in the case. “Respondents fail to demonstrate that this is even a close case. Respondents do not demonstrate that the damages award was so utterly irrational that it amounts to an arbitrary remaking of the parties’ contracts,” Los Angeles County Judge Mel Red Recana wrote in his ruling obtained by Rolling Stone . “Respondents do not show that the arbitrator acted beyond his authority under the scope of the parties’ arbitration agreements.” … [Read more...] about Kevin Spacey Loses Bid to Overturn $31 Million ‘House of Cards’ Award for ‘Sexually Touching’ Crew Members
A former crewmember on the reboot of The Wonder Years has accused Fred Savage of forcing himself on her at a bar one night in a new Hollywood Reporter piece detailing some of the allegations that may have led to Savage’s ouster from the show earlier this year. Back in May, Savage was fired from his role as executive producer and director of The Wonder Years following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct. Executives at Disney, which owns ABC — the network on which The Wonder Years aired — declined to share details, though reports at the time highlighted incidents of “verbal outbursts and inappropriate behavior.” According to the new THR piece, Savage’s exit came after a group of six women who worked on the show sent a complaint to Disney and spoke to an HR executive about their concerns in February. While they all acknowledged that Savage could be kind, charismatic, and supportive, they claim he was also prone to bouts of anger and verbal … [Read more...] about Fred Savage Accused of Forcing Himself on Ex-‘Wonder Years’ Crewmember in Bar Bathroom
Harvey Weinstein had a mixed day in court Wednesday as he speeds toward the scheduled October start of his serial rape trial in Los Angeles. Lawyers for the disgraced movie mogul scored a victory when Judge Lisa B. Lench sided with the defense and rejected one of the five “prior bad acts” accusers whom prosecutors planned to call to the witness stand to show Weinstein’s alleged “propensity” for criminal behavior. The victory was tempered, however, by a related ruling in which Judge Lench denied Weinstein’s request for a special pre-trial hearing where he could cross-examine the extra witnesses before they’re called before a jury. Defense lawyers Mark Werksman and Alan Jackson sought the pre-trial hearing with the argument that the court should pre-screen the extra accusers — whose allegations did not lead to criminal charges — to test their credibility before they’re introduced at such a high-profile trial. “These witnesses are not just any old witnesses. They’re purported … [Read more...] about Harvey Weinstein Gets Proposed ‘Prior Bad Acts’ Accuser Bumped From Serial Rape Trial

Rocky Mountain Fur Con 2017 – a convention for enthusiasts who wear animal costumes ingrained with human characteristics for roleplaying – has been canceled. On Monday, the RMFC board of directors organizing the 10th annual event, set to be held in Denver next August, posted a statement that a “movement has grown into a community that promotes violence” which resulted in a “sudden and drastic increase in security costs” exceeding a third of the event’s operating budget. The announcement came after the founder of the Furry Raiders, an outlier group within the anthropomorphic subculture, adopted an armband which featured a black paw on a red background that some thought had a striking resemblance to a part of the Nazi uniform. Convention chairman Zachary Brooks did not directly name the Furry Raiders in his account, but convention staff identified the Furry Raiders as being at the center of the controversy after being labeled a neo-Nazi group throughout the community, which largely … [Read more...] about Does the Furry Community Have a Nazi Problem?
