Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, Ani DiFranco Team for Song Supporting Abortion Rights
Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and Ani DiFranco have collaborated on new song “Disorders” to raise awareness for reproductive rights and proceeds for the National Network of Abortion Funds . The track — which also features work from saxophonist Skerik, Josh Evans, and Stanton Moore — starts as a soft rock song with some stark lyrics about the patriarchy. But for the last minute or so, the track turns into a drum and electric guitar-backed rock jam session. “I have entered into negotiations/With the blissful abyss of disassociation,” sings DiFranco. “And all that it implies/Watching you weaponize your ejaculations.” In a press release, Gossard explained that the song had been sitting around for six years as a demo, before Skerik “had the epiphany” to ask DiFranco to join the track. “Ani’s fierce melodic independence and her visceral in-the-moment vocal performance took this track to a much higher plane,” Gossard said. “I’m thrilled to have been part of this song and to … [Read more...] about Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, Ani DiFranco Team for Song Supporting Abortion Rights
Taylor Swift Is Haunted by Loneliness in Ethereal New Song ‘Carolina’
As Swifties patiently wait for Taylor Swift to release the next installment of her Taylor’s Version album re-records, the singer-songwriter is keeping fans satiated with the release of “Carolina,” a new song written for forthcoming movie, Where the Crawdads Sing . The film, out July 15, is an adaption of American author Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name. Alluding to the film’s backwoods setting, the track evokes the elegiac tone of Appalachian folk ballads as Swift’s voice, otherworldly and siren-like, is accentuated by sweeping string arrangements and the gentle strum of a guitar. “And you didn’t see me here/No, they never did see me here,” she sings, bringing her voice down to a haunting half-whisper. Swift drew inspiration for the emotionally-wrought tune from the film’s storyline, which follows Kya, the so-called “Marsh Girl” who raises herself in the marshlands of North Carolina. Frequent Swift collaborator Aaron Dessner, who worked alongside the Grammy … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift Is Haunted by Loneliness in Ethereal New Song ‘Carolina’

Santigold Steps Into Her Own Power on New Song ‘Ain’t Ready’
Santigold gets in the interrogation room with herself in the new short video accompanying the arrival of her latest song, “Ain’t Ready.” The track will appear on the musician’s new album, Spirituals , set to arrive Sept. 9. “Ain’t Ready” feels at once atmospheric and heavy, with Santigold’s falsetto vocals filling the spaces between the pounding drums and industrial synths. The short video accompanying the song matches the defiant tone of Santigold’s lyrics — “I know those fools boy ain’t ready/Still they spill their lies and blame” — with the musician encountering herself in a sterile interrogation room before unleashing all her fury. In a statement, Santigold explained that she started “Ain’t Ready” with producer Illangelo before Sbtrkt and Dre Skull helped her finish the song. “It was one of those songs where as soon as I opened my mouth the whole melody just poured out,” she continued. “There were no words but all the emotion was there. To me, the song sounded full of … [Read more...] about Santigold Steps Into Her Own Power on New Song ‘Ain’t Ready’
Santigold Embraces Her Greatness on New Song ‘High Priestess’
Santigold has returned with a jittery blast of future punk, “High Priestess,” which marks her first solo release in four years. “High Priestess” is pure energy with its blend of restless percussion and new wave synths (a video short for the song was also released). Santigold largely crafted the track with the Berlin-based producer/DJ Boys Noize, though she brought in a handful of other collaborators — including Ray Brady, Psymun, and Ryan Olson — to help her fine-tune the exact sound she wanted. “The energy I was looking for couldn’t be the old version of punk rock, it had to be the future sound of punk rock,” Santigold said of the song in a statement, adding: “It all came together in a way I could never have imagined when we started, but it was exactly what I set out to make. I want to make music that sounds like the past and the future all in one; music that makes you feel safe enough to jump in, but then takes us on a journey to where we needed to go but have never even heard … [Read more...] about Santigold Embraces Her Greatness on New Song ‘High Priestess’
