Austrian writer-director Sebastian Meise has been named president of the Jury at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival . He’ll be joined on his jury by screenwriter and producer Lucile Hadžihalilović, writer-director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, actor Milan Marić and producer and senior consultant for international co-productions Katriel Schory. Meise co-founded Viennese production company Freibeuter Film before his acclaimed debut feature film Still Life premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and garnered several awards. His further credits include documentary Outing and Great Freedom, the latter of which won the Cannes Jury Prize for Un Certain Regard and was also awarded the Heart Of Sarajevo award for Best Feature Film and Best Actor (George Friedrich). Universal / Legendary ’s summer action thriller Skyscraper has secured a July 20 China release date, significantly opening in the throes of the (unofficial) annual blackout on Hollywood fare. That the film is backed by the Wanda-owned Legendary and takes place in Hong Kong likely were factors working in the Dwayne Johnson -starrer’s favor. Johnson is a big draw in the Middle Kingdom, and here he plays a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran who now assesses security for skyscrapers. While on assignment at Hong Kong’s The Pearl, a 244-floor vertical city with every safety and security challenge, he’s framed when bad guys target the building. Germany’s Leonine Studios is acquiring Berlin-based Hyperbole Medien . Effective June 1, Hyperbole will sit next to i&u TV, Madame Zheng Production, Odeon Fiction, SEO Entertainment, W&B Television and Wiedemann & Berg Film in the Leonine production group. Hyperbole focuses on socially relevant entertainment using a mix of politics and pop culture that targets Generations Y & Z. Its productions include ZDF’s series Germania , which won the Grimme Award and the Golden Camera Digital Awards and ZDFneo’s political entertainment format 13 Fragen (ZDFneo). While Tom Cruise phoned it in from London last year for his Mummy CinemaCon session for Universal, it stands to reason that the blockbuster actor would be at Paramount ’s session today considering he is being lauded at tonight’s Pioneer Dinner. Appearing on stage with Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christoper McQuarrie, they devoted arguably the last half hour of Paramount’s CinemaCon session to the sixth title in the franchise.
