The BBC ’s savings target has rocketed by 40% to £400M ($493M) and the corporation is responding by cutting 1,000 hours worth of shows per year. Issued in the past few minutes, the BBC’s Annual Plan said there will be an “acceleration” of savings plans due to the freezing of the license fee, which should end next year, and the “economic environment.” The BBC revealed it is therefore projecting a deficit of £352M, up from this year’s £271M. Alongside its move to reinvest £300M into online and digital, which was announced last May , the corporation is therefore upping its savings target from £285M to £400M by 2027/28. EXCLUSIVE: British visual effects outfit Union is launching its first international studio in Montreal, Canada, as it looks to expand the services it offers its clients in feature film and high-end television. The new studio, which comes as Union enters its 15th year, is based in a refurbished industrial building called Le Nordelec between Griffintown and Pointe-Saint-Charles. Union is in the process of recruiting technical, creative and production roles across all levels for its Canadian team. Founded by Adam Gascoyne and Tim Caplan in 2008, Union has grown from strength to strength and has fast become a top player in the London VFX scene. Streaming Films Are Far More Diverse Than Theatrical Features, Study Finds
When it comes to diversity in film, streaming far outpaced theatrical releases last year, according to a new report from UCLA , which found that diversity has taken “a step back in theatrical films but strides forward in streaming.” The report found that women and people of color fared far better in the streamers than in theatrical releases in every job category surveyed, which included directors, writers, lead actors and overall casts. And despite recent progress, the report’s authors say that in 2022, diversity in many key jobs on theatrical releases saw a “backslide to 2019 levels.” Even so, the percentage of women directors of theatrical films has nearly tripled since 2011 – from 4.6% to 14.6% last year – though they remain underrepresented by a factor of more than 3-to-1.
