THE night Dirty Den handed divorce papers to scheming wife Angie at the Queen Vic is still a piece of TV history. Some 30.6million stunned viewers watched Leslie Grantham’s menacing performance on Christmas Day 1986. It may be more than 30 years ago but only two events in UK telly history have had more viewers — Princess Diana’s funeral and when England won the 1966 World Cup. Grantham was only expected to play Britain’s most reviled character Den Watts for ten weeks. He had actually auditioned for the part of market trader Pete Beale. The two characters could not have been more different. But Grantham was so convincing as the cold, calculating, menacing landlord who repeatedly cheated on his bubbly wife and impregnated a 16-year-old girl that he stayed for four years.
