EXCLUSIVE : It’s a big week for high school mariachi bands. Fremantle is developing a drama series set in the world of competitive mariachi bands in the United States. It comes as Going Varsity in Mariachi , a documentary directed by Sam Osborn and Alejandra Vasquez stars a talented group of students at Edinburg North High School in South Texas who compete for the title of the state’s best mariachi band, is hitting the Sundance Film Festival. The Mosquito Coast producer Fremantle has been bolstering its scripted business in recent years and has splurged $270M on 11 companies, many of which are helping this drive. ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ & ‘Vampire Academy’ Canceled At Peacock
EXCLUSIVE : A pair of YA drama series are coming to an end at Peacock . The NBCU streamer has cancelled One Of Us Is Lying and Vampire Academy . One Of Us Is Lying ran for two seasons, while Vampire Academy, which comes from Julie Plec, has ended after one. Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons. One Of Us Is Lying , which is based on Karen M. McManus’ novel, launched in October 2021 and was the first Peacock pilot to go to series. It was renewed for a second season earlier this year that aired in October 2022. Vampire Academy was handed a straight-to-series order in May 2021 and premiered in September 2022. Alfred P. Sloan Foundation & Sundance Institute Name ‘Pod Generation’ Best Feature Film
The Sundance Institute Science-in-Film initiative with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation named Sophie Barthes’ The Pod Generation as this year’s Feature Film Prize winner. In addition three artists grants went to recipients for three projects in development. The prizes were handed out at a reception following the Appetite for Construction panel at Filmmaker Lodge. Apple Confirms ‘Flora And Son’, Streamer’s Biggest Sundance Deal Since ‘CODA’
Apple has confirmed Deadline’s scoop on winning an all-night bidding battle for the John Carney -directed Flora and Son , as Apple’s Heads of Worldwide Video Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht and their head of features Matt Dentler burned the midnight oil to make the label’s biggest Sundance Film Festival deal since they acquired CODA in 2021. That film went on to establish Apple as the first streamer to win the Best Picture Oscar, with the film also winning Best Adapted Screenplay for director Sian Heder and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. The three-year old Apple film label paid $25 million for CODA , and Flora and Son came in underneath that but it is certainly a pricey purchase — near t he $20 million Netflix paid Monday for another festival favorite, Fair Play .
