The Secret Life of H.G. Carrillo

· February 11, 2021 ·

On the first day of the fall 2009 semester at George Washington University in Washington D.C., professor H.G. “Hache” Carrillo marched into his own creative writing class 10 minutes late, clutching a copy of The Norton Anthology of English Literature in one hand. “He pulls it above his head and we all look at him, thinking this is going to be a required book,” says former student Tarek al-Hariri. “And he slams it so hard on the table, and we all jump three feet. And he says, ‘Now that I have your attention…’ ” Carrillo then reached into his bag, pulled out an orange, and placed it on the table alongside the book. “ ‘Now, I want all of you to take out paper and I want you to write the orange,’ ” al-Hariri remembers Carrillo saying. “And I’m like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about?’ ” Bewildered, the students picked up their pens. “It was the most boring, torturous exercise ever, and I was really pissed at him.” Later, the lesson became clear. “ ‘The point is you cannot write … [Read more...] about The Secret Life of H.G. A Teenage Tevin Campbell Didn’t Feel Ready to Sing Prince’s Songs. Now, He’s Glad He Did

· February 12, 2021 ·

At age 12, Tevin Campbell — freshly signed to Warner on the strength of a voice that was already drawing comparisons to Michael Jackson — hopped on a call with Prince . “I remember riding in the limo and talking to him over the phone,” Campbell says. “I knew who Prince was, of course, but at the time, I had a really, really, really high voice, so I didn’t pay attention to a lot of male artists — I couldn’t sing male artists’ songs. To me, meeting Whitney would’ve been, ‘Aaaah!'” But Campbell’s inability to to scrape the lower register didn’t stop him from working with Prince. It was a brief but successful partnership: Campbell appeared in the Graffiti Bridge film, a sequel to Purple Rain , and sang the Top 15 single “Round and Round,” a brittle track penned by Prince that split the difference between “Sign o’ the Times” and the New Jack Swing that was ascendant in 1990. The two reconvened to work on four more songs that would end up on Campbell’s double-platinum second album, … [Read more...] about A Teenage Tevin Campbell Didn’t Feel Ready to Sing Prince’s Songs. Jodie Foster Makes It Work

· March 21, 1991 ·

I really liked the autopsy scene.” Jodie Foster spears some fat, glistening cannellini beans from the antipasto plate and describes a satisfying day’s work on her upcoming film. “There’s a body on the table, murdered, with grotesque mutilations,” she says. “So there’s a certain basic horror, of course. And compassion for the victim. But the more my character gets into the work, she experiences a kind of – I know this sounds weird – a kind of exhilaration. She’s excited . She wants to get inside the skull of the man who did this. Particularly when they discover that, um, thing inside the body.” “Oil and vinegar, miss?” Over the pretheater blare of this jammed Manhattan trattoria , Foster is assessing the grisly leavings of psycho killers. Amid the gaunt models in cat suits, the clipped and pomaded men in J. Press, she sits drinking red wine and chatting knowledgeably – con brio – about cannibalism, sexual psychosis and ritual dismemberment. Jodie Foster’s … [Read more...] about Jodie Foster Makes It Work
