Margaret Keane Dies: Kitschy ‘Big Eyes’ Artist, Subject Of Tim Burton Biopic Was 94
Margaret Keane , whose wildly popular paintings of big-eyed, melancholy children (and later celebrities with deep pockets) became one of the most widely recognized signature artistic styles of the late 20th Century – and whose long battle with her husband over his fraudulent and lucrative claims of authorship inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film Big Eyes starring Amy Adams – died Sunday at home in Napa, California. She was 94. Her death was reported on her official Facebook page today: “We’re sad to announce that Margaret Keane, ‘The Mother of Big Eyes, our Queen, a Modern Master and Legend’ peacefully passed away Sunday morning at her home in Napa, CA, she was 94.” Her daughter Jane Swigert told The New York Times that the cause of death was heart failure. Keane’s instantly recognizable paintings of children, typically portrayed and described as waifs with huge, sad and dinner-plate-sized eyes, became massively popular in the 1950s and ’60s, at first sincerely … [Read more...] about Margaret Keane Dies: Kitschy ‘Big Eyes’ Artist, Subject Of Tim Burton Biopic Was 94

The Lincoln Center Theater production of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot with a new book by Aaron Sorkin will arrive on Broadway next spring rather than this fall, producers announced today. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Although Red Hot Chili Peppers member Chad Smith and his doppelgänger Will Ferrell may have spent much of 2014 trying to prove how different they are from one another, with their hilarious competition on The Tonight Show , the drummer does have something in common with the actor: he’s very funny. As Rolling Stone read the drummer the questions fans sent in via Twitter, he cracked wise about everything from the Chili Peppers’ penchant for wearing socks on their private parts to how Ferrell “robbed” him of the Golden Cowbell during his drum-off with the actor this year. Over the past quarter century, Smith has played with the Chili Peppers, the supergroup Chickenfoot and various sessions with the likes of Kid Rock, the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash. And, with an eye toward helping other musicians, he has also spent time lobbying for music education in Washington, D.C. – including a recent trip to the White House – and building a drum community with his Chad Smith Drum … [Read more...] about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
Danger Mouse has become one of rock’s biggest producers in the past five years, working with A-list bands like the Black Keys and U2 – but he admits his personal life hasn’t been quite as successful. “I don’t have a relationship, so I’m kind of all over the place,” says the 36-year-old, whose real name is Brian Burton. “When I meet younger people, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not so young anymore. Is this the way it’s supposed to be?'” See Where Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album Lands on the 100 Best Albums of the 2000s Burton’s angst helped inspire After the Disco (out January 14th) – the second LP by Broken Bells , his collaboration with James Mercer of Oregon indie kings the Shins , who are on break. “He can be pretty dark in his musings about life, being single, all that stuff,” says Mercer, who crashed at Burton’s place in Los Angeles while they were making the record, often staying up late to drink and talk. “Whereas I’ve left a lot of that behind. I’m kind of … [Read more...] about Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
Broken Bells Live Out Close Encounters in Their UFO-Themed ‘Control’ Video
Space is the place once again in the new Broken Bells video, which finds the duo of James Mercer and Danger Mouse exploring the final frontier with a slew of found footage as they perform “Control,” off their latest collaboration, After the Disco . Although the clip doesn’t have much to do with the epic alien love story the duo told in the “Holding On for Life” video , it features clips of Broken Bells cranking out the funky, punch-drunk cut alongside a montage space-related footage, from sun flares and moon missions, to crop circles and pictures supposed UFOs – some of which feature the spiky pink sphere that’s become the duo’s emblem. The “Control” clip has plenty to excite the Mulder in everybody who yearns to believe, and as scientist George Wald reminds us at the beginning: “I think there’s no question that we live in an inhabited universe that has life all over it.” Released back in February, After the Disco followed up Broken Bells’ self-titled 2010 … [Read more...] about Broken Bells Live Out Close Encounters in Their UFO-Themed ‘Control’ Video
Danger Mouse on the Sci-Fi and Deep Chats Behind Broken Bells’ New LP
Broken Bells, the collaborative project between Danger Mouse and the Shins’ James Mercer, return February 4th with the new album After the Disco, which augments the bands melodic psych-pop with jittery grooves and sleek synths – and it shows that the duo are serious about being more than just a one-off side project. “It’s a pretty sad record,” Danger Mouse tells Rolling Stone . “It’s pretty bleak in a way. We used the same couple of guitars, the same bass, the same drums, maybe two or three synthesizers at most for the whole album. I like the idea of two guys being able to make something that sounds really big.” We spoke with Danger Mouse about After the Disco , his friendship with Mercer, producing the new U2 album and more. Don’t miss our ultimate guide to 2014’s best music, movies, TV and more How did the After the Disco concept start? About a year ago, James and I worked for about a month on ideas, and that was the last idea we had. Broken Bells Explore Sci-Fi in ‘Holding On for Life’
A human and a spacewoman fall in love and then allow themselves to be manipulated in space by the members of Broken Bells (Danger Mouse and the Shins’ James Mercer) in the duo’s video for “Holding On for Life.” The song is a Bee Gees -like indie-disco number off the group’s forthcoming album After the Disco , which is due out February 4th. The video draws from two sci-fi-themed, seven-minute short films the group recently filmed, one titled “Angel and the Fool” and another dubbed “Holding On for Life,” both of which star Anton Yelchin ( Star Trek , Fright Night ) and actress Kate Mara ( House of Cards , 127 Hours ). The full “Holding On for Life” clip makes for a taut yet open-ended storyline about love and the side effects of inhaling vapors in a space helmet at a party. Some of the action takes place on a dancefloor inside a spacecraft shaped like the pink orb on the cover of Broken Bells’ 2010 debut . Broken Bells’ ‘Vaporize’ and 14 More of the … [Read more...] about Broken Bells Explore Sci-Fi in ‘Holding On for Life’
Tom Brady, Gisele Share Ice Cream On Italian Vacation, But Is It Avocado?!
Adorable moment between Tom Brady and Gisele on their Italian vacay this week ... the two lovingly shared an ice cream cone -- but it's got us all wondering, is that avocado flavor?!?! You'll recall ... the NFL legend is famous for never putting away sweets, and turning to the ultra-healthy avocado ice cream alternative whenever he wants to be somewhat naughty with his diet. Backgrid To be fair to the 44-year-old GOAT, it seemed he only had a couple bites of the treat ... so, breathe easy, Alex Guerrero and Bucs fans. And, yes, if you were wondering, Brady is still working out despite the vacation ... he was spotted getting in a sweat sesh on a yacht on Tuesday before the QT time with his supermodel bae.
