Only 17% of Rogue One Dialogue Is Spoken by a Female Character

· January 20, 2017 ·

A lot has been made bout the fact that both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One have female lead characters, but a new study shows that might not be all it's cracked up to be. While both of these latest entries in the Star Wars franchise do have strong women as protagonist, both movies are still quite male heavy. Even lopsided. A new study shows that only 17% of the dialogue in Rogue One is spoken by one of the movies few female characters. Jyn Erso led Rogue One to becoming the highest grossing movie in the U.S., no small feat that Felicity Jones helped push the movie to the top the box office as the face of this first Star Wars anthology movie . The prequel was also praised for its diverse cast. But diving deeper into the story elements, and what actually happens on screen shows that not only the film's dialogue, but also the male-to-female character ratio is way off course. Starsky and Hutch

· March 5, 2004 ·

Think of it: were detective Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and his partner, Ken Hutchinson (David Soul), hot for each other when they started working undercover in Bay City? You can suss out clues from the ABC series that ran from 1975 to 1979, or you can watch Starsky and Hutch on the big screen and see subtext stiffen into hard and hilarious evidence. Turning moldy cop shows into movies has become such a numbing quick-buck proposition ( The Mod Squad , I Spy , The Avengers ) that it’s bracing to find one with the smarts to laugh at itself, not to mention the studly stereotypes spawned by the Dirty Harry era. And while the gags in Starsky and Hutch are more hit-and-miss than nonstop inspiration, the movie does get a fair share of laughs, starting with the gay thing. Even the opening credits tease the fab duo by having Barry Manilow warble his lovesick hit “Can’t Smile Without You.” Then director and co-writer Todd Phillips ( Road Trip, Old School ) — who cleverly … [Read more...] about Starsky and Hutch

‘This Is a Play About Shades’: Jeremy O. Harris Revisits ‘Slave Play’ Script

· February 28, 2021 ·

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ( $39 rather than the average $124 ), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadwa y and live performances around the globe. With everything in disarray, it was unclear whether the theater awards would happen due to the protracted season. Related Stories What It Took to Orchestrate 'Bad Romance' for 'Moulin Rouge! The media covering the upcoming trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin ’s role in the death of George Floyd will have some new competition from messengers hired by the Minneapolis government. A team of social media influencers will be enlisted by the Minneapolis City Council to send “approved messages” during the upcoming trial, according to reports. The city plans to pay six influencers $2,000 each to disseminate the city’s views, Fox News said . The plan was approved Friday by the council. “The goal is to increase access to information to communities that do not typically follow mainstream news sources or city communications channels and/or who do not consume information in English,” the council said in a statement, WCCO-TV reported . “It’s also an opportunity to create more two-way communication between the city and communities.” The city council said it is targeting social media users with large followings.
