As it always seems to, the plot returns to the Bill/Sookie/Eric love triangle, at this point almost a welcome comfort: Bill Compton continues to talk with 19th century stiffness and provides Sookie’s alibi for the last year, telling everyone she was off doing his top-secret vampire errand. What he doesn’t tell Sookie is that he’s been involved with laywer-about-town Portia Bellefleur (Sookie gleans this from a peak into Portia’s head) and that he has seemingly claimed the Louisiana vampire throne from Sophie-Anne Leclerq, meaning he’s now officially above Eric on the vampire feeding chain. Eric Northman, who appeases Nan Flannigan‘s need for a suave vampire to front their PR movement (“It’s a post Russell Edgington world, everyone, and we win back the public one smile at a time”), also proclaims he was the only one to not believe Sookie was dead. After he opts not to drain his victim, but glamour him instead, the American Vampire League’s Nan Flannigan — who has been tracking Bill and is intrigued by his decision — emerges from the shadows. “They might be dinner, but they don’t deserve to die,” he tells her. She tells him it’s the dawn of the True Blood era, and Louis Pasteur is a vampire seeking to synthesize human blood! Oh, and she wants him to be a vampire spy. Fast-foward to his battle with Sophie-Anne Leclerq, and we find out that it was Nan pulling the strings on the showdown, which ended with snipers shooting wooden bullets into Sophie-Anne and Nan appointing Bill vampire king of Louisiana. Though Nan Flannigan doesn’t make an appearance, we still feel the effects of her string-pulling, especially when Jessica goes to Bill for advice over how to handle telling Hoyt about her Fangtasia digression and his first question is whether or not she was caught on film. “I’m not stupid; I’m just unfaithful,” she tells him, and he seems to draw on his regret at not being up front with Sookie when he advises her to be honest with Hoyt in a touching father-daughter scene.
