Venice Film Festival: Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Roma’ Wins Golden Lion; ‘The Favourite’ Takes Grand Jury Prize – Full List

UPDATE, writethru with backstage comments : Alfonso Cuaron ’s black-and-white Mexican drama Roma has scooped the Golden Lion at the 75th Venice Film Festival . This is the first movie from Netflix to take such an honor at a major festival, and the second movie in a row from a Mexican filmmaker to win here. Last year, Guillermo del Toro ’s Golden Lion winner, The Shape Of Water, went all the way to a Best Picture Oscar. Del Toro was jury president this year and in announcing his dear friend as the winner, joked, “Now, let me see if I can pronounce the name correctly.” As it did last year with Shape , the press room erupted in applause when Roma won. EXCLUSIVE: The Saturn Awards have unveiled nominations for their 50th anniversary edition, with organizer the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films saying that the ceremony to reveal winners is set for October 25 in an event that will be livestreamed on ElectricNOW. Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman , directed by Matt Reeves, is the top-nominated film with 12, featuring in categories including Best Superhero Film, and acting noms for Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano and Colin Farrell. Previously, Buckley supported the department’s clients and covered festivals including the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. In his new role, Buckley will focus on representing screenwriters, directors and producers, and covering film studios. He interned at WME in 2017 before starting fulltime in the mailroom in 2018. He worked his way to becoming an assistant in the motion picture literary department and was promoted to coordinator in 2021. He is a graduate of Emory University. EXCLUSIVE: Willem Dafoe is set to join Nadia Latif’s directorial debut, The Man in My Basement . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Mosley, who adapted the novel with Latif. It depicts the complexities of race, power and identity. Dafoe will be seen as the role of Anniston Bennet, an opulent gentleman who requests to rent out the basement of Charles Blakey’s ancestral home. The story unveils Anniston asking for more than just a place to stay, building a complex dynamic between the two.
