Tresa Baldas Detroit Free Press Published 6:01 PM EST Feb 19, 2019 The federal government called it a scam. Three men wired $88 million overseas, prosecutors say, and tried to keep it a secret. But a defense lawyer says they weren't doing anything bad with the money: They were just sending it home to relatives, and the government knew it. "They are just creating an opportunity for their loved ones to receive money. ... In the olden days, they used to just pass it off by hand. Here, they are doing it through a wiring service," said Detroit attorney Nabih Ayad, who believes the government is being overzealous in the case. Ayad stressed the case is not about terrorism, and that the government has never suggested that the money wound up in the wrong hands. "I think it's a little bit too aggressive to bring federal charges against them," Ayad said. "In my client's case, the government had already visited his business in 2013 and never told him to stop doing it." Andrew McCabe Told 60 Minutes Rod Rosenstein Was NOT Joking About Wearing a Wire With Trump
When it was first reported that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein discussed surreptitiously recording President Donald Trump amid discussions to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment, the narrative was that his comments were a joke, but a new account from former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe challenges this narrative. CBS News reporter Scott Pelley said McCabe denied the claim that Rosenstein’s wire idea was a joke during his interview on 60 Minutes. “It came up more than once and it was so serious that he took it to the lawyers at the FBI to discuss it,” Pelley said, referencing McCabe’s remarks. At the time, Rosenstein called the New York Times’s report on the 25th Amendment conversations “inaccurate and factually incorrect.” “I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President … [Read more...] about Andrew McCabe Told 60 Minutes Rod Rosenstein Was NOT Joking About Wearing a Wire With Trump
‘That’s how she’s wired’: Pilot lauded for handling crisis
BOERNE, Texas (AP) — The Southwest Airlines pilot being lauded as a hero in a harrowing emergency landing after a passenger was partially blown out of the jet’s damaged fuselage is also being hailed for her pioneering role in a career where she has been one of the few women at the controls. Tammie Jo Shults, one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy, was the captain and piloting the Dallas-bound Flight 1380 when it made an emergency landing Tuesday in Philadelphia, according to her husband, Dean Shults. One of the engines on the Boeing 737 exploded while the plane was traveling 500 mph (800 kph) at 30,000 feet (9144 m) with 149 people on board. Shrapnel hit the plane and passengers said they had to rescue a woman who was being blown out of a damaged window. The woman later died of blunt force trauma to her head, neck and torso. Shults calmly relayed details about the crisis to air traffic controllers, and passengers commended her handling of the situation. … [Read more...] about ‘That’s how she’s wired’: Pilot lauded for handling crisis
10 years after ‘The Wire,’ cast members reflect on their careers after the classic series
When HBO’s heralded series “The Wire” went off the air 10 years ago, it wasn't immediately clear that it would be a launching pad for much of the ensemble.Sure, the show had been hailed as one of, if not the, greatest television drama ever and it launched series regulars Idris Elba (Russell “Stringer” Bell) and, less directly, Michael B. Jordan (Wallace) to stardom while making names for other cast members including Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty), Michael K. Williams (Omar Little), Wendell Pierce (William “Bunk” Moreland) and Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon). But the intense five-season drama set in inner-city Baltimore did not provide the instant spark that some actors expected, says Lance Reddick, who played the impressive and intimidating police commander Cedric Daniels. It was only over time, as the show's stature grew, some actors say, that it truly rewrote the arc of their careers. After the series finale, Anwan Glover, who played the low-key … [Read more...] about 10 years after ‘The Wire,’ cast members reflect on their careers after the classic series
