At the beginning of November, Rogen is in New York, enjoying a cup of chicken-vegetable soup at a cafe downtown. He and his wife are going to a wedding on Long Island – a friend of hers from kindergarten – so they decided to make a week out of it and do some preview screenings of The Interview. The studio got him a private plane to take to D.C. for another screening tonight, and they’re staying at a fancy hotel where Kanye West likes to hang out. Rogen actually bumped into Kanye the last time he was here, doing press for Neighbors this past summer. It was right after the “Bound 3” video came out – a shot-for-shot remake of Kanye’s “Bound 2,” starring Franco as Kanye and Rogen as a topless Kim Kardashian – and he worried Kanye might be upset. It’s been a long time since Jackson Browne, For Everyman and Late for the Sky defined the Seventies singer/songwriter genre: musically functional but lyrically vibrant, they hit home with an audience that was itself earnestly searching for big truths and lasting loves. The Pretender added mainstream rock & roll and was, at its best, extraordinarily gripping. As for Spielberg specifically, does one flop that isn't a total disaster really alter his career path all that much? Absolutely not. He just started production on Ready Player One, which on paper at least seems like it will be a true-blue return to form of classic Spielberg blockbuster filmmaking. There is almost no universe in which Ready Player One becomes a major flop, unless somehow Spielberg really botches it, which, given his track record, isn't very likely. He has also already announced that he will be directing Indiana Jones 5 with Harrison Ford returning as well. Even though Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was less than great, it still made a truckload of money, and you can bet that Spielberg won't make the same mistakes twice. Disney is also in charge of that project, so all is going to be well on that side of things. … [Read more...] about The BFG Is a Big Flop, What Does That Mean for Spielberg?
