Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 9:30 AM EST Nov 19, 2018 LINCOLN, Neb. — Rocky Lombardi stuck to his script. “I didn’t see any drops.” You didn’t see any drops? “No.” Of course, Michigan State’s quarterback saw them. Every one of the 88,793 bundled-up fans in Memorial Stadium did. His coaches did. Even his defense did from the sidelines. At least seven of Lombardi’s 25 incompletions touched his intended receivers’ hands —some high, some wide, some right on target. But he wanted to put the blame on himself and not spread it around. That’s simply a quarterback protecting his teammates and avoid division. That’s all the Spartans can do right now as a group. MSU arrives at the final game of a tumultuous regular season in a tenuous spot. Not just at quarterback, where coach Mark Dantonio continues to try and juggle Lombardi and Brian Lewerke. But with an entire offense that continues a drop also … [Read more...] about Michigan State football’s Dantonio has tough decisions ahead

Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 3:26 PM EST Nov 11, 2018 Five takeaways from Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News following Michigan State's 26-6 loss to Ohio State on Saturday. Lombardi should start over dinged-up Lewerke The quarterback position has been at the center of the discussion most of the season for Michigan State, but even more so since junior Brian Lewerke injured his right throwing shoulder in the victory over Penn State in mid-October. He’s struggled since then and has said on several occasions that he has pain when he throws, which makes it odd that coach Mark Dantonio has stuck with Lewerke, who has started each game expect for the win over Purdue. Redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi started against the Boilermakers and excelled, which makes the choice to go with Lewerke even more perplexing. More: Michigan State QB shuffle leaves unanswered questions Lombardi came in for Lewerke on Saturday in the loss to Ohio State and provided … [Read more...] about Michigan State Spartans: 5 things we learned vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 3:09 PM EST Nov 11, 2018 EAST LANSING – Looking back at what happened in Michigan State football’s 26-6 loss to Ohio State and looking ahead to next Saturday’s game at Nebraska. Three things we learned QB quagmire Brian Lewerke looks like a quarterback with an arm injury. Rocky Lombardi looks like a talented freshman who has only played a handful of snaps. And MSU’s decision to start Lewerke, then bring in and subsequently pull Lombardi, leaves plenty of confusion as to how Mark Dantonio and his staff plan to handle the position for the final two regular-season games at Nebraska and against Rutgers. With no remaining chance for a Big Ten East title and already being bowl eligible, it could be in the best interest of Lewerke and the Spartans to give Lombardi experience and rest the junior’s ailing shoulder. Detroit Free Press Published 2:40 PM EST Nov 11, 2018 Not terribly surprising, but Michigan football remains No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, released on Sunday afternoon. With Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame all rolling to victories, just like U-M (9-1, 7-0 Big Ten) did, 42-7 over Rutgers on Saturday, there will likely not be a shift in the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings that come out Tuesday. In fact, the top seven stay the same from last week, with Georgia, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Washington State's win over Colorado bumped the Cougars up from 10th to eighth, followed by Ohio State, who fell a spot to ninth despite winning at Michigan State, 26-6, on Saturday, and LSU, which dropped from 9 to 10. The Spartans (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) were 24th in last week's rankings and had the fourth-most "others receiving votes,' unofficially listing them at 29th. Penn State is 16th and Northwestern is 24th, meaning only four Big Ten teams are … [Read more...] about Michigan football still 4th in AP poll; Michigan State out
Matt Charboneau The Detroit News Published 2:43 PM EST Nov 11, 2018 East Lansing — When Ohio State coach Urban Meyer walked off the field Saturday at Spartan Stadium, he understood what his team had just faced. For the No. 1 offense in the Big Ten and the fifth-ranked unit in the nation, getting 26 points against the Michigan State defense was no simple feat. Actually, the Buckeyes’ offense managed just 17 points — well off their season average of 42.2 points a game — as seven points were scored by the Ohio State defense and OSU picked up two points when Michigan State intentionally took a safety. The 347 total yards for Ohio State came well short of its average of 547.2 yards a game. “Everything about going against that defense was really hard,” Meyer said. That’s what every team on Michigan State’s schedule has learned this season. While keeping the Spartans out of the end zone hasn’t been as challenging, … [Read more...] about Michigan State isn’t pointing fingers as offense lags behind defense
