As the live music industry’s return remains fairly nebulous amid the ongoing pandemic, Mint Talent Group — a booking agency started last year by former CAA, William Morris Endeavor, and Paradigm agents — is working with ticketing platform Lyte to set up a reservation system for a swath of its artists’ upcoming shows, the companies tell Rolling Stone. It marks Lyte’s first agency-wide deal. Mint represents 180 clients, including notable legacy artists such as Taj Mahal, Mavis Staples and Art Garfunkel. Thirty of those artists, including Mahal, Charlie Musselwhite and Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers Band, have already signed on to offer reservations, and Mint says it looks to bring on more artists going forward in the longer term as more of its artists show interest in getting involved. Financial specifics on the deal weren’t disclosed. Facebook Inks Deal With Three Aussie Publishers, Ending Punishing Week Down Under For Social Media Giant
Facebook unveiled commercial agreements with three Australian publishers Friday capping a tense week that saw passage, the day before, of a law recasting how Facebook and Google must approach the use of news content. The next news battleground may be Europe where copyright directives adopted by the bloc are meant to be in place across the EU by June with national mechanisms for publishers to be paid by tech companies. It’s not clear how that will unfold but the issues are similar. In Australia , Facebook signed letters of intent with independent news organizations Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media several days after it reinstated local news on the site after a nearly week-long blackout to protest the News Media Bargaining Law that requires and codifies negotiations with publishers. ‘The Father’ And ‘Cherry’ Open in Theaters; Billie Holiday And Billie Eilish Hit Streaming – Specialty Preview
Sony Pictures Classics is set to release awards contender The Father in select New York and Los Angeles theaters today before expanding nationwide March 12 before landing on PVOD on March 26. That’s quite a theater-to-digital journey for the Florian Zeller-directed drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film, which premiered at Sundance in 2020, is adapted from Zeller’s 2014 play which starred Frank Langella, who won a Tony Award his performance. Zeller and Christopher Hampton adapted the play which follows Anthony (Hopkins), a defiant 80-year-old man who lives alone and refuses the carers that his daughter, Anne (Colman), encouragingly introduces — and she needs the help. She can’t make daily visits to her father and his grip on reality is unraveling. The Ballad of Mike Love
M ike Love bounds up the stairs inside his massive Lake Tahoe home (10 bedrooms in all, 12 bathrooms, two elevators, not to be believed) and into a large walk-in closet stuffed to overflowing with garish, multicolored shirts and a gazillion baseball caps, many of them emblazoned with the name of his band, the Beach Boys . A suitcase rests on the floor. Love nods at it, prods it with his foot. “A lot more shirts are in there,” he says, “because, if you must know, I haven’t unpacked.” And why should he unpack? For the past 54 years, he and various versions of the Beach Boys , which these days include only him as an original member, have toured almost constantly. On his current outing, he has 172 dates lined up, cramming 19 European shows into 22 days this past December, for instance, and shortly thereafter flying back stateside to give the 6,500 citizens of tiny Avon, Colorado, the chance to hear all about California girls. From there, it’s onward, evermore, venues big and small, … [Read more...] about The Ballad of Mike Love
‘The Croods’ Director Joel Crawford On Experiences That “Empowered” Him To Put His Stamp On ‘A New Age’ Sequel
While directing The Croods: A New Age , Joel Crawford often found himself chasing that ‘Wow’ factor, which all great films (and sequels) have in common. His follow-up to 2013’s The Croods would expand the scope of a universe established by writer/directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, at the same time preserving those qualities that made it beloved in the first place. Earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, the original film followed The Croods, a family of cavemen trekking through uncharted territory, after the destruction of their home. The sequel—produced by DreamWorks Animation , and distributed by Universal Pictures —picks up with the clan as they move in with a family that claims to be more evolved, wrestling with change in their lives, and their future as a pack.
