The Ballad of Mike Love

· February 17, 2016 ·

M ike Love bounds up the stairs inside his massive Lake Tahoe home (10 bedrooms in all, 12 bathrooms, two elevators, not to be believed) and into a large walk-in closet stuffed to overflowing with garish, multicolored shirts and a gazillion baseball caps, many of them emblazoned with the name of his band, the Beach Boys . A suitcase rests on the floor. Love nods at it, prods it with his foot. “A lot more shirts are in there,” he says, “because, if you must know, I haven’t unpacked.” And why should he unpack? For the past 54 years, he and various versions of the Beach Boys , which these days include only him as an original member, have toured almost constantly. On his current outing, he has 172 dates lined up, cramming 19 European shows into 22 days this past December, for instance, and shortly thereafter flying back stateside to give the 6,500 citizens of tiny Avon, Colorado, the chance to hear all about California girls. From there, it’s onward, evermore, venues big and small, … [Read more...] about The Ballad of Mike Love

‘The Croods’ Director Joel Crawford On Experiences That “Empowered” Him To Put His Stamp On ‘A New Age’ Sequel

· February 26, 2021 ·

While directing The Croods: A New Age , Joel Crawford often found himself chasing that ‘Wow’ factor, which all great films (and sequels) have in common. His follow-up to 2013’s The Croods would expand the scope of a universe established by writer/directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, at the same time preserving those qualities that made it beloved in the first place. Earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, the original film followed The Croods, a family of cavemen trekking through uncharted territory, after the destruction of their home. The sequel—produced by DreamWorks Animation , and distributed by Universal Pictures —picks up with the clan as they move in with a family that claims to be more evolved, wrestling with change in their lives, and their future as a pack. The Pandemic Generation: How Organizations Are Supporting Youth and Tackling Social Justice Work

· February 26, 2021 ·

As an entrepreneur with deep roots in entertainment, retail, media strategy and technology, I have seen the immense social good that can be done when changemakers step up to shape the landscape of their communities. According to findings from Kantar Monitor via Marketing Dive, “68% of consumers expect brands to be clear about their values.” Millennials in particular, at 46%, expect brands to be brave, with 42% of Gen Z agreeing with these expectations. For better or worse, our value is tied to our values. In a year full of challenges to the status quo, ask yourself: What side of history will your business be on, and how will it be remembered? For nearly a year, America’s youth have been staring at their screens for virtual learning eight hours a day or more. These are the same screens where they watched this past year’s many abominations of justice carried out, from the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Jacob Blake, which sparked protest across the world, to the … [Read more...] about The Pandemic Generation: How Organizations Are Supporting Youth and Tackling Social Justice Work

Todd McCarthy: The Screens Are Empty In Telluride

· September 2, 2020 ·

It’s time to start packing, to call around to find out what might be playing, to pull out the sweaters and a warm jacket for the first time in months and, above all, to look forward to a guaranteed long weekend of films that will all be worth seeing and that will provide a strong indication of what kind of serious movie year this will be. Unfortunately, everyone knows the depressing answer to that question. And now, for some of us, is when the miserable truth of the matter is staring us straight in the face: the movie screens in Telluride will be empty over this Labor Day weekend for the first time in 46 years. There will be no hour-plus ride from the Montrose Airport to the host town of just 2,325 year-round residents, no dash to grab the schedule where the titles to be shown will be revealed for the first time, no agonizing scrutiny of the schedule that reminds you, once again, that there’s no way you’re going to be able to see everything you want to see, even if you luck out … [Read more...] about Todd McCarthy: The Screens Are Empty In Telluride

Hear the Beach Boys Reunite on Charity Re-Recording of ‘Add Some Music to Your Day’

· February 26, 2021 ·

Beach Boys Mike Love , Al Jardine , Bruce Johnston, and David Marks have come together to re-record the band’s 1970 classic “Add Some Music to Your Day.” It’s the lead-off single of the new LP California Presents Add Some Music , which arrives on April 23rd. The album is the brainchild of David Beard, the editor and publisher of the long-running Beach Boys fanzine Endless Summer Quarterly. He brought the various factions of the Beach Boys, minus Brian Wilson, back together for the new version of “Add Some Music to Your Day,” which also includes contributions from Brian Wilson’s daughters Wendy and Carnie Wilson; Al Jardine’s son Matt Jardine; and Mike Love’s children Christian, Hayleigh, and Ambha Love. It was produced by Rob Bonfiglio, who is married to Carnie Wilson and plays guitar in Brian Wilson’s touring band. A portion of the profits will benefit Feeding America. “It’s a real joy to listen to this new incarnation of the song recorded with so many family members,” … [Read more...] about Hear the Beach Boys Reunite on Charity Re-Recording of ‘Add Some Music to Your Day’
