The Los Angeles Lakers had a lot riding on the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery. Even though they had the third worst record in the NBA this season – only the Phoenix Suns (24-58) and Brooklyn Nets (20-62) finished below them in the standings – there was a 53.1 percent chance that their pick would fall out of the top three in the upcoming draft. If that was the case, their pick would’ve gone to the Philadelphia 76ers as a result of the Steve Nash trade the Lakers made with the Suns in 2012, which would’ve made their current rebuild a whole lot harder. Fortunately for the Lakers, their pick ended up being No. 2 – start the conspiracy theories ! – meaning they get to keep their pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and select one of the brightest stars in college basketball. All signs point towards the Boston Celtics, who have the first pick despite finishing the season with the best record in the Eastern Conference, drafting Markelle Fultz, so the Lakers will have an opportunity to draft one of … [Read more...] about College Basketball Star Lonzo Ball’s Hollywood Dreams Could Come True

Actors’ Equity Leaders Say They’ve Been “Threatened” By 99-Seat Plan Opponents
The war of words continues between Actors’ Equity and a group of Los Angeles-based actors and theater owners opposed to the union’s plan to force small playhouses to pay their actors minimum wage. In a recent email to members, the union said the minimum wage opponents have “openly threatened Equity staff and councilors and blacklisted members of their own community for speaking on behalf of fair pay.” Opponents say that forcing 99-seat theaters in L.A. to pay minimum wage will force many of them out of business, or to go non-union. The union, however, scoffed at that notion, telling members it’s just part of a “campaign of misinformation and propaganda.” “This is a stunning assault by Equity on its own membership,” said Frances Fisher , one of the leaders of the group opposed to Equity’s plan. “It’s really too bad my union has chosen this scorched-earth approach. Publicly discrediting your own membership because they have a legitimate disagreement with you is just poor … [Read more...] about Actors’ Equity Leaders Say They’ve Been “Threatened” By 99-Seat Plan Opponents
The 25 Best True-Crime Podcasts of All Time
Ten years ago, most people hadn’t even heard of a podcast. Now, they’re an integral part of the media landscape, and none more so than those about true crime . To rank the best, we polled true-crime aficionados about their favorite shows, then sifted through the top choices. Whether they cover a new case each episode or present a story over the course of a season, these picks each shaped the genre in their own way. Some are the results of deep investigative journalism; others are by amateur sleuths trying to help families find answers. Some focus on bringing publicity to cold cases in underrepresented communities, and some changed the way we think about crime storytelling altogether. Perhaps equally important, they’re all great listening, promising the kind of captivating intrigue that continues to draw generation after generation to true crime: tragedy, mystery, a search for answers, and always the hunger for justice. 25. CounterClock Fans of procedurals will bond with … [Read more...] about The 25 Best True-Crime Podcasts of All Time
Donnie Wahlberg on 10 Things You Forgot About Lakers, Celtics Rivalry
Few sports rivalries are as storied as Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. The two teams have been separated, historically, in just about every category imaginable. The Lakers of the Sixties and Seventies were spearheaded by the twin stars of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. Though Bill Russell was indisputably the head of the early Celtics, their style – predicated on smothering defense and fast-break basketball – was far more team-oriented than their Hollywood rivals. It worked, too: The Celtics began the rivalry winning 7-0 against the Lakers in the Finals, beginning with a 1959 sweep of the then-Minneapolis franchise. Boston won eight straight titles and eventually every title in the 1960s besides 1967, when the Philadelphia 76ers took home the trophy. In the 1980s, the differences grew even more distinct. Earvin “Magic” Johnson personified the Lakers with his gigawatt smile and larger-than-life persona (and stature; he was a six-foot, ten-inch point guard). He was black and he … [Read more...] about Donnie Wahlberg on 10 Things You Forgot About Lakers, Celtics Rivalry

Johnny Depp’s Winning Verdict Should Be Tossed Out For New Trial, Amber Heard Says; Jury Vetting Questions Raised
A month after Johnny Depp won his multi-million defamation trial against Amber Heard , the ex- Pirates of the Caribbean star now officially faces the first attempt to smack down his legal victory, with a harsh one-two-punch. “For all the reasons set forth above, and for the reasons set forth on the record during the hearings and at trial, in the Motions in Limine and Motions to Strike, Ms. Heard respectfully requests this Court to set aside the jury verdict in favor of Mr. Depp and against Ms. Heard in its entirety, dismiss the Complaint, or in the alternative, order a new trial,” says a not unexpected memorandum filed July 1 in Virginia Circuit Court by the Aquaman star’s attorneys. Heard has long alleged that she suffered violent domestic abuse from Depp. She told a UK court in 2020, and the US trial this year that she had also been repeatedly sexually abused by Depp. Almost from the moment the over $10 million verdict came down on June 1 … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp’s Winning Verdict Should Be Tossed Out For New Trial, Amber Heard Says; Jury Vetting Questions Raised

7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
From the beginning of his career, Mike Tyson has been irresistible to Hollywood’s various screens: when you’re the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world with a high-pitched lisp, you’re an instant surreal punchline. Iron Mike has played along in a slew of rap videos, movies ranging from Rocky Balboa to Scary Movie 5, and TV shows ranging from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to The Simpsons (which rendered an unauthorized version of him as Drederick Tatum). Here’s seven of our favorite Tyson cameos over the years. Read an excerpt from Mike Tyson’s ‘Undisputed Truth’ 1. DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson” (1989) Back when Will Smith was a rapper rather than box-office king and show-biz patriarch, he needed a hit to follow up “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” He came up with this tall tale about having an attack of hubris and getting in the ring with Tyson (despite the opening warning of somebody who claimed he saw a Tyson … [Read more...] about 7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
