EXCLUSIVE : The BBC is betting big on season two of Heyday Television ’s deepfake spy thriller The Capture , promoting it to the coveted Bank Holiday weekend 9pm slot that in recent years has been occupied by Bodyguard , Peaky Blinders and Vigil. Deadline can exclusively reveal the scheduling for this year’s August Bank Holiday Sunday, which sees Ben Chanan ’s Holliday Grainger-starring six-parter graduate from a Tuesday 9pm slot where it posted average rating of nearly 7.5M viewers per episode and was BBC iPlayer’s most requested new title across all genres of 2019. Season two will drop on U.S. streamer Peacock in November. Season one’s audience increased through the run and Rebecca Ferguson, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, said it was this “word of mouth” that partly drove the scheduling decision. Speaking to Deadline, she credited the show’s sophistication paired with entertainment value as the driving force behind its success. “You have to use … [Read more...] about BBC Promotes ‘The Capture’ Season Two To Coveted Bank Holiday August Slot

Film Czar Tom Sherak: Plan To Boost LA Production Coming By Early 2014
In his first civic event since being named LA’s Film Czar last month , Tom Sherak today said he intends to have a plan to increase production in the city around the beginning of next year. “My job is to get the lions of industry, people I’ve known for years, to come up with a plan that I can take to the mayor and we can take to Sacramento,” he said during a signing ceremony with Mayor Eric Garcetti , politicians and others at Raleigh Studios. The optics of the day were clear: The public event was for the inking of the city’s recently passed ordinance to waive fees for pilot productions in LA — a law Garcetti authored for the City Council before the mayoral election — and marked the first signing ceremony of his new administration. Runaway production has emerged as a high-profile issue for the mayor and Hollywood is one of his major constituencies. The event attracted such industry reps as PGA chief Mark Gordon, Sons Of Anarchy actor Ron Perlman, producer Dean Devlin, Bad … [Read more...] about Film Czar Tom Sherak: Plan To Boost LA Production Coming By Early 2014

Ron DeSantis & Kari Lake Get Drag Makeovers As ‘The Daily Show’ Brings In ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star To Help
Here’s a crossover for fans of The Daily Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race. The Comedy Central series and the VH1 show, which was just renewed for season 15, are coming together to drag the Republican party over its recent comments on, well, drag. The Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan and RuPaul star Kerri Colby, who appeared on season 14, are helping the likes of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, Kari Lake, who is running to become Arizona governor, and Michigan Republican Beau LaFave to find their inner drag queens. It comes after DeSantis filed a complaint against a Miami restaurant for letting children into a drag brunch event. Lake, meanwhile, has attacked drag queens during campaigning, despite previously partying with drag queen Richard Stevens, otherwise known as Barbra Seville, who was dressed as Marilyn Monroe at the time. Beau LaFave recently announced a new bill that would empower parents to sue public schools that expose their children to drag shows. … [Read more...] about Ron DeSantis & Kari Lake Get Drag Makeovers As ‘The Daily Show’ Brings In ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star To Help
The Hot New Strategy for Unseating Trump Republicans: Don’t Make It About Trump
There was a time when one could often find Mandela Barnes on MSNBC. His hits peaked in late summer 2020, when Wisconsin ’s 33-year-old lieutenant governor took to the liberal airwaves to register his outrage over a police shooting in Kenosha. Those appearances left a strong impression, as Barnes — young, Black, equal measures charismatic and unapologetic — condemned law enforcement’s accounts of how one of their own shot Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man. ”We’re being told not to believe our eyes,” he said on the network. “If we have the accountability we deserve … we wouldn’t be in the place that we are with this racial reckoning.” It was an era when Democratic Senate candidates were fixtures on MSNBC, preaching soundbites to the liberal choir and hoovering up millions of dollars’ worth of donations, a reward for taking on a reviled Trump toady. Fast-forward two years, and Barnes is now a Democratic Senate candidate himself. But he’s appeared on the liberal cable network … [Read more...] about The Hot New Strategy for Unseating Trump Republicans: Don’t Make It About Trump
Meet the Rolling Stones Superfan Who’s Spent Millions on His Collection and Attends Every Single Show
When the Rolling Stones take the stage anywhere in the world, a few things are guaranteed to happen. The band will play “Miss You,” “Honky Tonk Women,” and “Midnight Rambler” at some point during the night, Mick Jagger will depart the stage midway through the set so Keith Richards can lead the band through a couple of songs on his own — and ultimate Stones superfan Matt Lee will be perched directly in front of the stage, usually on Ron Wood ’s side, with an iPhone 13 Pro in his hand to shoot stunning concert videos that will ricochet around the globe within hours. Lee has been following the band on tour since the mid-Nineties, and he’s amassed a collection of Stones memorabilia so massive that it’s earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records (and set him back more millions that he cares to count), but he only started uploading concert videos to YouTube within the past year. Despite his complete lack of experience as a filmmaker, his work stands out like Steven … [Read more...] about Meet the Rolling Stones Superfan Who’s Spent Millions on His Collection and Attends Every Single Show
Governor Jerry Brown Talks Up California’s Revitalized Economy To Roomful Of Hollywood Heavyweights
Governor Jerry Brown talked about the promise of California and played up the state’s economic comeback during a campaign fundraiser Thursday at Disney Studio boss Alan Horn’s Bel-Air home. A mostly industry crowd of about 100 including Robert Downey Jr. and Larry Flynt turned out for the 6:30-8:15 PM event, which was put on by a Hollywood political patrician guard. Co-hosts included Jeffrey Katzenberg , Warner Bros’ Barry Meyer and Kevin Tsujihara , Fox’s Jim Gianopulos, Universal’s Ron Meyer, Paramount’s Brad Grey, Sony’s Michael Lynton and MPAA chief Chris Dodd as well as Steven Spielberg and David Geffen , though Geffen didn’t attend. All of the co-hosts had pledged to raise $54,440 each for Brown’s re-election campaign next year. Tickets for the event went from $5,000 to mogul-level $27,200. Details are sketchy about the exact amount of money raised Thursday night, but a source tells me “it’s a nice chunk of change” with estimates … [Read more...] about Governor Jerry Brown Talks Up California’s Revitalized Economy To Roomful Of Hollywood Heavyweights

Grant Morrison: Psychedelic Superhero
Grant Morrison is, at the moment, on deadline for five comic-book scripts – three Batmans, two Supermans – plus the first draft of a screenplay about heroic dinosaurs fighting rapacious space aliens. But he won’t be getting to any of that today. On this bright early-summer afternoon in his native Glasgow, Morrison has some far more implausible stories to tell, and they might even be true. “This is the house that can’t be lit,” he says, striding into the green-walled, wood-floored living room of one of the four homes his lucrative comic-book career and intermittent screenwriting work afford him – this one a 130-year-old town house in a wealthy enclave known as “millionaire’s row.” “It swallows light. There was a séance in the backroom, and the place never recovered. We keep changing the bulbs, but they won’t turn on.” It’s not hard to imagine serious weirdness going down in this shadowy place, decorated as it is in a haute-bohemian Euro-creepy fashion that makes it look like the … [Read more...] about Grant Morrison: Psychedelic Superhero
