China recently set release dates for two summer films – Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion on June 10 and big local-language production Mozart From Space (by the director of the Detective Chinatown series) on July 15. That’s good news for the giant market’s reopening, said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond . But he doesn’t expect heightened scrutiny of Hollywood fare to subside anytime soon despite the Jurassic news . China has declined to date many high-profile U.S. films with recent Marvel omissions perhaps the most glaring. At a media conference Q&A Wendesday, Gelfond called 2021 “a really funky year” for U.S. films in China. The exec is especially interested on that market given his company’s significant exposure there. First, “the Chinese had their own backlog of unreleased films so there weren’t going to let in a lot of Marvel films and other films,” he said. Also, there was a “large, failed PVOD experience, where pristine copies went day-and-date … [Read more...] about Imax CEO Rich Gelfond Sees China’s Hard Line On Hollywood Continuing

Cannes Review: Letitia Wright In ‘The Silent Twins’
Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska ( The Lure, Fugue) makes her English-language debut with The Silent Twins , the strange and remarkable story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twin sisters who only communicated with each other from 8 to later-teen years when drugs and drinking led to petty theft and an arson charge that landed them in the tightly secured medical ward of Broadmoor for 11 years before being released in the 1980s. Creating their own puppetry and dolls, poems and music, which they only broadcast for each other on a fake radio program, the “twinnies” as they were called by family fell into an odd void that became more pronounced, even when they were forced to go to separate schools at one point. And they carried on this way until becoming young women landing and in legal trouble until incredibly being incarcerated for over a decade, five or six times as long as the longest sentence for the petty crimes of which they were accused. In knockout performances, … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Letitia Wright In ‘The Silent Twins’

Cannes Review: Andres Ramirez Pulido’s ‘La Jauria’
Out in the jungle, no one can hear you dragging a body around. Mind you, nobody notices much what you do in the city, either. Colombian director Andres Ramirez Pulido ’s debut feature, La Jauria , screening in Critics’ Week at Cannes, opens with a grab-bag of images familiar from current Latin American cinema — a couple of teenage boys in neon-lit urban darkness, some elaborate sniffing and nose-wiping, a bike that shouts “stolen” as they careen down a highway — but soon detours into stranger and much more remote territory. One thing you can be sure of: wherever they are, these boys are going to be in trouble. Where they are, once that opening sequence has set a scene that will immediately be ripped from beneath our feet, is mysterious. Eliu (Jhojan Estiven Jiminez) previously seen under a streetlight with a bottle in his hand, is one of a gang working around a decrepit hacienda, emptying a stagnant swimming pool of weeds under the sun before going into a clearing to … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Andres Ramirez Pulido’s ‘La Jauria’

Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes
From a cramped hotel suite in a luxury Cannes hotel, a pair of film executives are trying to pull off an unlikely feat: Sell distribution rights to Kevin Spacey ’s comeback film. On May 17, Vantage Media International, or VMI, a Hollywood-based company that sells movies primarily to foreign markets, screened a finished print of the noir drama Peter Five Eight to would-be buyers willing to take a gamble on the two-time Oscar winner’s first leading role since his career came to a grinding halt in 2017 amid accusations of sexual misconduct. “The feedback is very good. People say it’s a quality film,” says VMI president of sales J.D. Beuafils. “But it’s really, really early on [in the deal-making].” In a room filled with marketing materials for VMI films like Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon and the Sam Worthington-Machine Gun Kelly Western The Last Son , the company’s COO Jessica Bennett offers an equally vague assessment when asked if the … [Read more...] about Kevin Spacey, James Franco, and More Are Trying to Make Comebacks at Cannes
