As Netflix continues to expand internationally, Ted Sarandos said he’s got sights on offering as many as 20 original scripted series per year as he sat in conversation with Netflix-friendly creators Vince Gilligan ( Breaking Bad ) and Mitch Hurwitz ( Arrested Development ) on Wednesday at NATPE . “I think we can launch — successfully, high quality — around 20 original scripted shows a year, which means every 2 1/2 to three weeks you’re launching a new season or a new show on Netflix meant to be for really diverse tastes all around the world,” he said. The question came in reference to Netflix’s recent original series Marco Polo , a $90 million production that drew mixed reviews but, he said, played extremely well overseas. “The launch and completion rates were comparable with Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards , and more than that it’s happening around the world at the same time,” Sarandos said. “The season 2 pickup was based on that performance.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE

Deadline Founder Nikki Finke Starts Fiction Site Hollywood Dementia: Excerpt
Deadline founder and former editor-in-chief Nikki Finke is up and running with Hollywood Dementia, a new website devoted to fiction showbiz stories written by Hollywood insiders. She tells me the site gets off the ground today with offerings from Hollywood lawyer Bertram Fields, David Letterman’s head writer Bill Scheft, Antonia Bogdanovich (daughter of Peter Bogdanovich and Polly Platt), and TV and feature writers Peter Lefcourt, Cynthia Mort, Jay Abramowitz & Tom Musca. Here’s a taste of Finke’s own fiction work. It’s bracing and not for the faint of heart, but were you expecting subtlety from her? There’s a link at the end if you care to give her site a try. She’s opening with a paywall, charging $1 a story so she can pay her contributors. Dying On A Bed Of Nails By Nikki Finke The men who run Mendelson Management wanted the women to just shut up and do their crappy jobs. That’s when the sh*t hit the fan. A handful of women managers working at the same … [Read more...] about Deadline Founder Nikki Finke Starts Fiction Site Hollywood Dementia: Excerpt
Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America
Fetty Wap, all of 24 years old, uploaded a song to SoundCloud in April of 2014 and it just, well, stuck around. “Trap Queen” — currently in its 34th week on the Hot 100 — continues to define pop ubiquity, blasting from car speakers in the middle of the day, getting requests at the club that night. The rapper, born Willie Maxwell, is at the Pepsi Center in Denver — far from his home in Paterson, New Jersey. He’s opening for Chris Brown near the tail end of a month-long, countrywide jaunt, but that’s just the tip of his celebrity: Kanye West was an early Fetty Wap supporter; Drake contributed a verse to the remix for his third hit, “My Way”; Taylor Swift covered “Trap Queen” with the rapper in Seattle. However, when Fetty Wap dropped the track list to his self-titled debut album — due out September 25th — A-list names were conspicuously absent. “I didn’t have no features on ‘Trap Queen.’ It was just me,” says Fetty on his tour bus in the shadow of the venue. He’s having his braids … [Read more...] about Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America
Olivia Newton-John Battles Back
A story idea from our London correspondent, circa 1975: Olivia Newton-John . You are going to have to face this subject sooner or later. But this is a story that definitely should not be question-and-answer style, since Olivia in person is quite boring. She has virtually nothing to say. One of my friends took her out once, and even then she had nothing to say. Olivia could understand. “I feel it must be strange for you interviewing me,” she said between shows at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, “because I must be so alien to the paper. When I found out I was doing the interview, I thought, ‘Why the hell would. They want to talk to me ?’ I’m so out of everything the magazine seems to represent.” Lee Kramer, Olivia’s manager and longtime lover, had okayed the interview, but not before making a request that Rolling Stone be gentle with her. “She’s keen to sit down with any members of the press,” he said in our first telephone conversation. “But sometimes they come to take … [Read more...] about Olivia Newton-John Battles Back
The ‘Dark Brandon’ Meme Has Died From a Terminal Case of Cringe
If you spend any significant time online — and particularly in the nebulous, insufferable realm of Politics Twitter — you’ve probably met him: 79-years-old, a full head of silver hair, an immaculately tailored suit, and, frequently, a pair of sizzling red laser-eyes. He’s “ Dark Brandon ,” President Joe Biden ’s alpha-male bizarro, and the latest star of the White House’s ham-fisted effort to convince people that the septuagenarian commander-in-chief is actually a Super Cool Badass Dude™. Dark Brandon is crushing it pic.twitter.com/w0L8xCzIW8 — Andrew Bates (@AndrewJBates46) August 7, 2022 In reality, the meteoric rise of the Dark Brandon meme — a liberal effort to reclaim the already-lame “Let’s Go Brandon” shibboleth popular among MAGA conservatives — is a cautionary tale. With a distinct air of “ How do you do, fellow kids? ,” the White House officials and allies sharing the meme are effectively distracting from the actual substance of a newly passed … [Read more...] about The ‘Dark Brandon’ Meme Has Died From a Terminal Case of Cringe

Girls’ Generation on Their Reunion: ‘It’s Just Fun To Get Together’
When Girls’ Generation made their debut back in 2007 with “Into the New World,” most members were under 18 and the K-pop industry was not nearly as prolific with group acts as it is now. Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun reached mainstream success with the release of “Gee” in 2009, which made Girls’ Generation a household name in South Korea . The group continued to grow in popularity in Asia and in 2011, they began working with Interscope Records to promote in the U.S. The next big shift came in 2017, the group’s tenth year, when members Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun left SM Entertainment — their longtime label, and now also home to Aespa and NCT — on the condition that the group would not officially disband. Over the past five years, there haven’t been many opportunities for fans to see Girls’ Generation all together, aside from social gatherings since the members maintain strong relationships with each other. But that’s over now: To mark … [Read more...] about Girls’ Generation on Their Reunion: ‘It’s Just Fun To Get Together’
The Band’s Essential Albums
When Eric Clapton first heard the Band , he knew he was done with Cream. “I’m in the wrong place with the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” the guitarist later recalled thinking, and he wasn’t the only one left stunned by the group’s laid-back revolution. Synthesizing R&B, country, blues and early rock with chops seasoned by years on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan , Canadians Robbie Robertson , Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson , along with their Arkansas-born drummer-singer Levon Helm — once collectively known as the Hawks, and, later on, the Crackers — made everything old-timey, rural and ramshackle seem profoundly cool. For the next eight years, they would craft some of rock’s earthiest, grooviest and most yearning sounds. Here’s our comprehensive guide to their legacy on record, from Big Pink to The Basement Tapes and beyond. Must Have Music From Big Pink (1968) “We were rebelling against the rebellion,” Robbie … [Read more...] about The Band’s Essential Albums
