Broadway Season Hit Hard By Covid: $845M 2021-22 Total Off 54% From Pre-Pandemic $1.8B High
Broadway ’s 2021-22 season – 10 weeks shorter than usual, plagued by Covid and the cancelations it caused, not to mention the tourists who didn’t show up – took a beating at the box office, with season-end numbers no less stark for being expected: The industry took in a total of $845,414,915 at the box office, down 54% from the the historic high of $1.829 billion set by the 2018-19 Broadway season (the last full season prior to the 2020 pandemic shutdown). Figures compiled by the Broadway League released today indicate that total attendance for the season was 6,729,143, also down 54% from the 2019 record high of 14,768,254. Despite the year-to-year downturn, the percentage of available seats that were filled during the 2021-22 season was a solid 82%. Some major caveats in a year-to-year analysis: The start of the season that came to a close on May 22 was delayed by 10 weeks due to the Covid shutdown, meaning the season was only 42 weeks long compared to the usual 52. … [Read more...] about Broadway Season Hit Hard By Covid: $845M 2021-22 Total Off 54% From Pre-Pandemic $1.8B High
Broadway 2018-19 Season Breaks Box Office Record With Historic $1.829B
Box office for the 2018-19 Broadway season hit a big $1.829 billion, easily besting the second closest recent year-end tally (last year’s tally for an unusual 53-week season of $1.697 billion). Total attendance for the just-concluded 52-week season was 14,77 million, about 7% greater than last year’s 53-week tally of 13,79 million. “The trend is clear: Broadway has never been more appealing to so many different people, ranging from kids to grandparents and everyone in between,” Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement. “This substantial growth in attendance clearly reflects the large variety of offerings including long-running shows, new hit productions and stories relevant to our society today. This coupled with the fact that over 50% of tickets are priced below $101, the industry is achieving its goal of being more accessible to everyone.” The new season has been heavy on the big hitters, from To Kill a Mockingbird and Network to … [Read more...] about Broadway 2018-19 Season Breaks Box Office Record With Historic $1.829B

‘Kevin Can Wait’ & ‘The Good Place’ Off To Solid Ratings Start As TV Season Begins
Snapshot, updated with final numbers: New series premieres: Kevin Can Wait (2.6 in 18-49), The Good Place (2.6 at 10 PM, 2.0 at 10:30 PM, preview); Returning series premieres all down, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (3.8, -19%, 15.8 million) tops night. With little fanfare, the broadcast networks are kicking off another season, bracing for another decline in Live+Same Day linear ratings, projected to be around -6%, in line with the year-to-year slippage last fall. The declines were steeper for TV’s biggest comedy, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, which is showing its age, opening its 10th season — last under the current deal with CBS — with a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating and 15.4 million viewers in the fast nationals. That is down 23% in the demo and 15% in viewers from the Season 9 opener and the lowest 18-49 premiere number since the comedy’s sophomore season. Still, indicating how much broadcast Live+SD ratings have eroded since then, Big Bang, whose L+SD result will likely be … [Read more...] about ‘Kevin Can Wait’ & ‘The Good Place’ Off To Solid Ratings Start As TV Season Begins

With a fiery inferno about to enter an apartment where a pregnant woman was seriously injured and in labor, 51 was all hands on deck—minus a cowardly Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) who abandoned her partner and ended up getting fired over it. NFL Reportedly Sets July Launch Of Mobile-Focused Streaming Service NFL+, Its Own Version Of Previous Verizon & Yahoo Setups
The NFL has reportedly decided to bring mobile streaming in-house, creating an owned-and-operated service called NFL+ to provide in-market live streams of games on mobile devices. Sports Business Journal reported that league owners signed off on the NFL+ plan during their meetings in Atlanta, following media speculation earlier this year about the scenario. The price point is said to be $5 a month, though the report noted that pricing could change. Given the blossoming of podcasting as a medium, the offering will likely include podcasts along with other team content and radio streams. Under current broadcast regulations, regular season games must be offered within teams’ local markets on TV networks available without a pay-TV subscription. That means NFL+ is likely to primarily be a complement to that bigger-screen setup. Previous deals with Verizon and Yahoo had offered NFL livestreams to laptops and mobile devices. And the league-operated NFL Game Pass … [Read more...] about NFL Reportedly Sets July Launch Of Mobile-Focused Streaming Service NFL+, Its Own Version Of Previous Verizon & Yahoo Setups
