The creator of the critically acclaimed BBC natural history series Walking with Dinosaurs has landed a new eight-part docuseries at NBC . The broadcast network has ordered Surviving Earth that explores the bizarre and amazing creatures and breathtaking landscapes of a vibrant lost world. The series is a co-production between Loud Minds, the UK production company founded by Walking with Dinosaurs creator Tim Haines, and Universal Television Alternative Studio. It marks another interesting move in the world of high-end factual programming; the U.S. broadcast networks have generally shied away from big docuseries or natural history programming, leaving the genre to the likes of Discovery Channel and PBS, or more recently streamers such as Netflix and Apple. Jeffrey Epstein ’s longtime girlfriend, confidante and co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison and the maximum $750,000 fine for her role in his sex-crimes operation involving underage girls. The sentence could credit her with two years time served, meaning the 60-year-old Maxwell could be free by her late 70s. She had faced a maximum of 65 years after being convicted of five felony counts including sex trafficking of a minor. Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 30-55 years, while Maxwell’s lawyers sought less than six years. The U.S. Probation Department had recommended a 20-year sentence based on her crimes being “heinous and predatory in nature.” U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan, who oversaw the trial, allowed seven victim-impact statements to be read before he handed down the sentence. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday that it is inviting 397 artists and executives to join the Oscar organizer’s membership ranks. The prospective 2022 class includes 71 Oscar nominees and 15 winners, with 44% of the invitees women, and 37% of the group belongs to underrepresented communities. See the full list below.
