‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ Review: Kickboxer’s Prison Memoir Is Punch to the Gut
There are boxing movies, there are jailbird dramas and there are hell-and-back memoir adaptations — A Prayer Before Dawn throws all three of these genres into a dingy cell together, forcing them to either make nice or beat each other senseless in a survival-of-the-fittest showdown. Thankfully, filmmaker Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Bosch-like take on Billy Moore’s autobiography of life in a Thai prison allows each of these distinct narrative types to eventually bleed all over each other, sometimes literally. Moore ( Joe Cole ) was a Liverpudlian ex-pat living in Bangkok, fighting amateur Muay Thai bouts. Locked up in 2007, Moore quickly found himself dropped into a world where he barely spoke the language, didn’t know the rules and couldn’t tell which direction the next fist is coming from. So he learned to rely on the kindness of strangers — notably a transgender convict named Fame (Pornchanok Mabklang) — the mercy of a gang led by a face-tattooed kingpin (Panya Yimmumphai) and … [Read more...] about ‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ Review: Kickboxer’s Prison Memoir Is Punch to the Gut
WWE’s Sasha Banks & Naomi Walk Out Of ‘Monday Night Raw’ Over Creative Issues
WWE Sasha Banks and Naomi -- WWE women's tag team champions -- reportedly walked out of "Monday Night Raw" last night after an argument with management about the creative direction of the show. WWE issued a statement to TMZ Sports about the impromptu exit, saying, "During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis's office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk and walked out." Officials from the promotion say when Banks and Naomi arrived at the arena they were made aware of their participation in the main event of 'Raw,' but allege both superstars claimed they were "uncomfortable" with who they were scheduled to wrestle. It's unclear if the incident is part of an internal storyline. Though, WWE's statement makes it seem it was not part of the show, even writing, "Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their … [Read more...] about WWE’s Sasha Banks & Naomi Walk Out Of ‘Monday Night Raw’ Over Creative Issues
‘Star Trek Discovery’ Review: Sonequa Martin-Green Show Solid But Thrusters Not Activated Yet For All Access’ Big Jump
SPOILER ALERT: This review contains details of tonight’s Star Trek Discovery debut. Having started a bit later tonight on CBS than planned due to NFL overruns, Star Trek Discovery aims to boldly take CBS All Access on a new subscriber rich adventure. After all the behind-the-camera drama, delays, secrecy and hype for the Sonequa Martin-Green -led 15-episode first season, Discovery has finally taken off. It’s a launch Leslie Moonves hopes will result in a signup windfall for CBS’ nearly 3-year-old streaming service CBS All Access. After all, Discovery is the first new small-screen installment of the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise since Enterprise premiered in 2001. And Moonves’ plan just might work. Despite its often over-explanatory scripts, jittery direction, scattered plot points, silly Beatles, Chuck Yeager and Amelia Earhart shout-outs, Discovery is conventional and solidly satisfying serialized TV that speaks to our times, as … [Read more...] about ‘Star Trek Discovery’ Review: Sonequa Martin-Green Show Solid But Thrusters Not Activated Yet For All Access’ Big Jump

‘Final Cut’ Cannes Opening-Night Film Review: Michel Hazanavicius’ Very Good Comedy About Making A Very Bad Zombie Flick
Originally planned to open the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year before the worsening Covid situation forced the festival to again go virtual, Oscar-winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius made the right decision in insisting his comedy Final Cut (Coupez!), about the making of a low-budget bad zombie movie, should be presented with a full house in a theatre, thankfully not to be watched on your computer at a prestigious film festival. In holding out for the real thing he scored big as it was chosen as the opening-night out-of-competition film of the 75th Cannes Film Festival. It seems entirely appropriate that a movie all about the love of making movies should signal the full return of a fest devoted to all things cinema over the course of its 75 years. And for this director, whose 2011 black-and-white silent film The Artist was also a love letter to movies, and also premiered here on its way to Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, this seems fated to be. … [Read more...] about ‘Final Cut’ Cannes Opening-Night Film Review: Michel Hazanavicius’ Very Good Comedy About Making A Very Bad Zombie Flick
Olympics Closing Ceremony Review: Johnny Weir Chills Out At K-Pop Pageant
The well-wired Asian nation’s culture and technology was heavily on patriotic display tonight in NBC ’s coverage of the Closing Ceremony of the XXIII Winter Games. However, it was the music of South Korea that really owned the beat and heart of the tape-delayed event and almost turned the Olympics into the best Grammys show you’ve probably never seen…even as politics crept in. “This is for all my bad girls around the world,” declared singer CL as the Closing Ceremony got a whole new kind of bounce with her single “The Baddest Female” and some K-Pop gold medal moves. “Let’s light it up and burn like we don’t care,” the 2NE1 alum and gold medalist Chloe Kim favorite proclaimed as the packed Olympic Stadium of 35,000 got on its feet fast. Offering a “reason to smile” and “hope in humanity” out of the Olympics, primetime host Mike Tirico eventually summed up the XXIII Winter Games tonight in pedantic geopolitical terms but that all took a backseat to pop … [Read more...] about Olympics Closing Ceremony Review: Johnny Weir Chills Out At K-Pop Pageant
Cannes Review: Pietro Marcello’s ‘Scarlet’
Italian director Pietro Marcello ( Martin Eden ) shifts his focus to France in Scarlet ( L’Envol ), a period drama in Directors’ Fortnight. Set in the rural north after the First World War, it’s a decade-spanning story of family, small town politics and — ultimately — romance. When Raphaël (Raphaël Thiéry) returns from war, his wife has died, leaving their baby daughter, Juliette, in the care of farmer Adeline (Noémie Lvovsky). Adeline gives Raphaël lodgings and helps him gain work as a carpenter. Juliette grows up close to her father, but this unconventional family is ostracized by many in the community, sealing Juliette’s fate as something of a loner. But she’s also a happy dreamer. The tone shifts into fairytale territory when a local woman (Yolande Moreau) encounters Juliette in the woods and tells her fortune, predicting that “scarlet sails” will one day take her away from the village. A loose adaptation of Scarlet Sails , a novel by Soviet author … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Pietro Marcello’s ‘Scarlet’
Cannes Review: Kirill Serebrennikov’s ‘Tchaikovsky’s Wife’
With Ken Russell’s madly over-the-top The Music Lovers reassuringly tucked in dusty attic corners after 52 years, a fresh and notably inspired take on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s fraught marriage arrives in the churningly emotional and visually rich Tchaikovsky’s Wife. Director Kirill Serebrennikov , whose most recent films were Leto and Petrov’s Flu , is currently in exile from his homeland following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Additional ill will at home surrounding the prominent theater and opera director’s new work stems from its exploration of the composer’s gay leanings, an officially taboo subject locally but one that will stir interest among significant audiences internationally. By all accounts, Tchaikovsky’s intimate life was fraught, complicated and likely rooted in a need to at least appear to adhere to convention. Almost at once, the film pulls you into to swirl of musically driven movement, emotional instability and highly focused desire — … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Kirill Serebrennikov’s ‘Tchaikovsky’s Wife’
