Julien Baker appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers Monday night as the musical guest, performing “Hardline” from her new album Little Oblivions with her band. In a black box performance space lit up by a handful of spotlights, Baker led the anthemic number that deals with her usual themes of depression, substance abuse, and self-forgiveness. “I always told you you could leave at any time/Until then, I’ll split the difference/Between medicine and poison/Take what I can get away with/While it burns right through my stomach,” she sang. Towards the end, the song built up into a U2-like swirl of guitars, drums, and stadium-sized synths. Baker released Little Oblivions last Friday via Matador, following 2017’s Turn Out the Lights . Along with “Hardline,” her third studio album includes the singles “Heatwave,” “ Faith Healer, ” and “ Favor ,” the latter of which features her Boygenius bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus . ‘Tina’: Film Review | Berlin 2021
The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, who survived an abusive marriage to rebuild herself as a superstar solo artist, looks back over her life and career in this inspirational portrait for HBO. Toward the end of Tina , the revealing documentary tribute by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin for HBO, Tina Turner is seen in an extended concert clip performing the Beatles' "Help" as a decelerated ballad — intimate, melancholy and full of feeling. It's the polar opposite of so many of her most iconic stage moments, either as an R&B human tornado or a growling rock 'n' roll lioness. But the takeaway from this uplifting look back over Turner's tumultuous life and five-decade career in music is that she got where she is not by relying on the help of others but through her own remarkable resilience and self-determination. In the #MeToo era, Turner's story is more relevant than ever, particularly because she spoke out about the ordeal of her marriage at a time when the majority of women in the public … [Read more...] about ‘Tina’: Film Review | Berlin 2021

Berlin Review: ‘Tina’ Documentary Paints Vivid Picture Of Musical Legend Tina Turner
Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin co-directed the sports documentary Undefeated in 2011, and their Berlin Film Festival Special Gala, Tina , could have shared the same title. While this is set in the world of music, its emphasis is on the resilience, survival and comeback of its subject, singer Tina Turner . Featuring a contemporary interview with Turner herself, the HBO Documentary Films title mixes talking heads with archive interviews and footage to paint a vivid picture of a musical legend. This is clearly an authorized biography — it’s executive produced by Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach — but it has enough verve and insight to entertain and enlighten. People magazine interview in which Tina revealed she’d been abused by her former husband and musical partner, the late Ike Turner. Commencing her contemporary interview, Tina says she had reservations about speaking out back then, so she asked her psychic what was going to happen. The psychic reassured her it … [Read more...] about Berlin Review: ‘Tina’ Documentary Paints Vivid Picture Of Musical Legend Tina Turner
Dr. Seuss Enterprises to Stop Publishing Six Books Due to Racist Imagery
Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which oversees the work of the late children’s book author, said it will stop publishing and licensing six books because they contain racist and insensitive images. The decision was announced on the official Dr. Seuss website Tuesday, March 2nd, which also marks the author’s birthday. The six books are And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , If I Ran the Zoo , McElligot’s Pool , On Beyond Zebra! , Scrambled Eggs Super! , and The Cat’s Quizzer . Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it came to this decision last year after reviewing its catalog with the help of a panel of experts, including educators. “These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” the statement reads. “Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ catalog represents and supports all communities and families.” Related Stories Julien Baker Performs 'Hardline' on 'Late Night With Seth … [Read more...] about Dr. Seuss Enterprises to Stop Publishing Six Books Due to Racist Imagery
