Akron/Family are a four-man band based in Brooklyn, of assorted rural origins (in Pennsylvania, California and upstate New York) and now roaming all over a wide, open space where antique folk balladry, primal drone and explosive improvisation meet and melt in a woodland psychedelia that answers an age-old musical question: What if Pink Floyd gave birth to Ummagumma in the Band’s basement at Big Pink? There is nothing retiring about the first nine minutes of Meek Warrior — “Blessing Force” is practically an album in itself, a mounting-hysteria suite of Hawkwind-like overdrive, healing-ritual chant and free-jazz blowing. The middle of the record (Akron/Family’s third, counting their 2003 split disc with Michael Gira’s Angels of Light ) is softer communion — pagan sing-along and log-cabin jamming — that turns wild and electric again in the ecstatic, tumbling rock of “The Rider (Dolphin Song).” Joining singer-instrumentalists Ryan Vanderhoof, Seth Olinsky, Miles Seaton and Dana Janssen … [Read more...] about Fricke’s Picks: What If Pink Floyd Gave Birth to Ummagumma in the Band’s Basement?

When visual effects supervisor Michael Fong and effects supervisor Bill Watral boarded Soul , they were each a bit intimidated, immediately recognizing the film as one of frighteningly novel ambitions. Meditating on the origins of the human personality, Pixar ’s latest would require them to bring to life characters and worlds unlike any they’d created before. Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, Soul centers on Joe (Jamie Foxx), a frustrated middle-school band teacher who seeks to return to Earth, to realize his dreams of performing as a jazz musician, after a sudden accident separates him from his body. Thrust into a celestial realm known as The Great Before, the character finds that he’ll only be able to get back to New York City if he agrees to mentor a stubborn, fledgling soul named 22 (Tina Fey). Tamron Hall has left NBC News , after becoming the most high-profile flotsam and jetsam of the division’s hire of Megyn Kelly — who is getting, among other things, the third hour of Today that Hall co-hosted. It was the Hall talks that led NBC News to inform Today staff of its Kelly-related 9 AM shakeup. Hall had to be told last week, because her contract was coming up and her reps were in talks with the news division. Last week, a source reported that the news division hoped she would stick around, continuing to appear on Today ‘s mothership 7-9 AM show and hosting MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall. Though Hall has exited, Al Roker will continue to host at 9 AM until Kelly joins the lineup in the fall. The couple's interview special with Winfrey draws one of the largest non-sports crowds of the 2020-21 TV season. CBS' interview special Oprah With Meghan and Harry delivered a big audience Sunday night. The two-hour special, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, averaged better than 17 million viewers — 17.14 million, according to Nielsen's fast national numbers. Aside from the post-Super Bowl premiere of The Equalizer on Feb. 7, that's the biggest audience for any non-sports program on the broadcast networks this season. It earned a 2.6 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49, trailing only a Thanksgiving night episode of The Masked Singer (which had a huge NFL lead-in) on the broadcast nets this season. Oprah With Meghan and Harry — which incited furious reactions in the British press Monday — was far and away the top show on TV Sunday by any measure. The closest show on the broadcast networks in total viewers was its lead-in, 60 Minutes , which drew … [Read more...] about TV Ratings: ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Delivers Big Audience for CBS
Breaking News Courtesy of NBA Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades AND the NBA Dunk Contest ... 'cause Blazers guard Anfernee Simons took home the top honors Sunday night after nearly kissing the rim!!! The 21-year-old edged out Knicks rookie Obi Toppin and Pacers rookie Cassius Stanley to win it all during halftime of the All-Star Game ... showing off his INSANE hops in the process. Simons' first dunk may have been the most creative of the night -- he grabbed the ball off a mini hoop 2 feet higher than the rim and brought it home for the slam. There was a bit of controversy in the first round -- many believed Stanley's between-the-legs slam deserved a better score ... but ultimately, scored lowest out of the first three dunks. Simons' second dunk was a tribute to one of his idols, Tracy McGrady -- throwing on a T-Mac throwback Raptors jersey for a one-bounce 360 dunk, which was good enough to earn him a spot in the finals.
