Casting Tom Holland as Spider-Man Turned Into a Big Fight Between Sony & the Russo Brothers

· February 28, 2021 ·

Sony wasn't originally as excited about casting Tom Holland as Spider-Man as the Russo Brothers and Marvel Studios were. The directing duo recalled casting Holland for Captain America: Civil War in a new interview promoting the release of their latest movie, Cherry . Bringing in an actor to take on one of the biggest superheroes on the planet is not an easy decision, and it appears that Sony was being extremely cautious about bringing in a new fresh face. Tom Holland has been praised for his portrayal of Peter Parker over the last handful of years, with many comic book fans claiming that he is the best actor to take the role on. However, he was relatively unknown when the Russo Brothers and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige found him. Sony wasn't sold on the idea. Joe Russo had this to say about the casting of Holland. Marvel wasted no time making sure that everyone was going to be talking about their San Diego Comic-Con presentation for the rest of the weekend. Paul Rudd and Michael Pena kicked off the panel with a reportedly hilarious video that features them recapping the entire MCU. At the end of the video, it was revealed that they were actually telling all of this to Michelle Pfeiffer, who was revealed to be playing Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp . Spider-Man: Far from Home has officially joined the box office $1 billion club. The final movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 3 is also the third movie from Marvel Studios to cross the $1 billion mark globally this year and the 41st movie to do so overall. In addition, even before hitting the box office achievement, Far From Home was already the most successful of any of the previous Spider-Man movies. If all of that wasn't enough, the sequel is now Sony's second highest grossing movie of all time, just behind Skyfall ($1.109 billion). Spider-Man: Far From Home was able to hit the box office milestone less than a month after hitting theaters and many predicted it would get up past $1 billion globally after it debuted. With that being said, the sequel should be able to beat Skyfall in the coming weeks to become Sony's highest grossing movie of all time. The close ties to Avengers: Endgame ended up helping out both movies in the end.
