‘Elvis’ Shakes, Rattles & Rolls To $31M+ In Fierce Dance-Off At Box Office With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Refresh for more analysis and chart In an amazing feat for an adult-skewing, 2 hour and 39 minute running movie at the box office, Warner Bros’ Baz Luhrmann directed Elvis is heading toward an estimated $31.5M opening, looking to truly top the box office. Outside of superhero tentpoles like Spider-Man: No Way Home at 2 hours and 28 minutes, lengthy movies have largely seen their openings capped during the pandemic, i.e. House of Gucci at 2 hours and 38 minutes did a 3-day of $14.4M while West Side Story at 2 hours, 36 minutes opened to $10.5M. In addition, it’s an embarrassment of riches for most of the majors this weekend as at least four movies look to clear $20M+ apiece. Elvis skewed heavily female at 58% with a massive 30% over 55 years old. Women and older adults have been the hard demos to pull out during the pandemic and it’s clear in the wake of elder demo movies such as Top Gun: Maverick cracking past the half billion … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Shakes, Rattles & Rolls To $31M+ In Fierce Dance-Off At Box Office With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Luke Combs’s Latest is Arena-Country With Nuance and Intimacy
Luke Combs wants you to know one thing: He’s a regular guy. He might be playing songs that immediately become playlist staples, but those ballads and rockers are, he maintains, the same ones he’d be playing if he were only outfitted with, as he croons on the opening track of his third album, Growin’ Up, “tips in a jar, my guitar, and an old barstool.” The 32-year-old North Carolinian, reigning Country Music Entertainer of the Year, stadium headliner, and holder of multiple platinum records, is trying hard to not be starstruck by his own success. Mostly, it works. While similar claims of humility from megastars can come off as a bit far-fetched, the dozen songs on Growin’ Up bear out the just-from-the-heart assertions that appear on the slow-burning “Doin’ This.” Combs adds just enough modern-day brawn to Nashville songwriting ideals to make the LP an enjoyable, and at times moving, spin through his world of small-town bars and big-hearted people. On Growin’ … [Read more...] about Luke Combs’s Latest is Arena-Country With Nuance and Intimacy

Of Studio 54, Michael Jackson, Cary Grant And A Hollywood “Pimp”: Director Matt Tyrnauer On His Two Awards-Contending Docs
Director Matt Tyrnauer finds himself in contention for awards this year with not one but two feature-length documentaries. Taken together, they offer a unique social and cultural history of America from the late 1940s into the 1980s. Studio 54 centers on the latter end of that time period, when entrepreneurs Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager transformed an old theater space in Manhattan into “the greatest nightclub of all time,” as Tyrnauer and many others consider it. “You could look at other genres of nightclub like the Stork Club and say, ‘That was great, too,’” the director notes. “But there was certainly nothing in the modern era that ever approached Studio 54, as hard as everyone tried.” From 1977 to 1979—the height of the disco era—the club became a magnet for celebrities and the non-famous, who cavorted in a drug-fueled atmosphere of revelry and wild abandon. “It was the perfect expression of its moment and the product of the peculiar genius of its … [Read more...] about Of Studio 54, Michael Jackson, Cary Grant And A Hollywood “Pimp”: Director Matt Tyrnauer On His Two Awards-Contending Docs
